A stone marker about 1.50 metres high, a protected streetscape of roads and houses, and a century-old Gameleira reveal different facets of historic Porto Seguro. The historical focus ranges from the architectural and landscape ensemble of Cidade Alta to a single monument, religious heritage and a collection on the history of Brazil. Cidade Alta and Centro Histórico
The architectural and landscape ensemble of Cidade Alta was listed by IPHAN in 1968. In addition, the entire historic site of Porto Seguro is protected. Centro Histórico is part of a protected streetscape of roads and houses shaped by the colonial era. This brings different scales of historical heritage into focus: the designated Cidade Alta ensemble and the historic site as a whole. The word “ensemble” draws attention to architecture and landscape as interconnected themes; the streetscape of roads and houses, in turn, characterises Centro Histórico. The Marco do Descobrimento
The Marco do Descobrimento stands in a square in Cidade Alta and faces the sea. The rectangular stone marker is about 1.50 metres high. On opposite sides, it bears the coat of arms of Portugal and the Cross of Christ. It stands on a slightly raised platform, is enclosed by a glass dome and has four access ramps. These specific details help define the monument: its location and orientation, its shape, the two symbols and its described structural arrangement.
Religious heritage and the Gameleira
Igreja da Pena is one of the seven Catholic churches considered part of Porto Seguro’s heritage. Another facet is the century-old Gameleira, an iconic landmark of Porto Seguro’s Cidade Histórica. The tree is part of the history and identity of the historic area. The church and the tree thus represent different facets of heritage: Igreja da Pena’s place among the heritage-listed Catholic churches on the one hand, and the historical and identity-related significance of the Gameleira on the other.
Collection and environmental education
The Memorial da Epopeia do Descobrimento adds a collection on the discovery of Brazil, the Age of Exploration and Indigenous peoples to the historical focus. One of the Memorial’s highlights is a faithful replica of a ship from Pedro Álvares Cabral’s fleet.
The marine environment offers another perspective.
