In the municipality of Morro do Chapéu, protected landscapes and archaeological sites meet winery visits and historical heritage. When planning your trip, it helps to know the different highlights: nature destinations range from waterfalls to rock formations, while wineries offer their own visitor experiences.

Protected Areas and Striking Landscapes

The municipality is home to three protected areas in the state of Bahia: Parque Estadual do Morro do Chapéu, APA Gruta dos Brejões – Vereda do Romão Gramacho, and Monumento Natural da Cachoeira do Ferro Doido. Parque Estadual protects campo rupestre, a transition zone between the Cerrado and Caatinga biomes, as well as archaeological sites. Nature and cultural landscapes are therefore both among the defining features of the municipality.

Cachoeira do Ferro Doido is 98 metres high. Buraco do Morrão is also one of Morro do Chapéu’s natural attractions; its name inspired the municipality’s name. Gruta dos Brejões is another striking landmark: its main entrance is 100 metres high and can be seen from the valley of the village of Brejões da Gruta. At the same time, access difficulties have hindered tourism at the cave. If you are planning a visit, check access conditions in advance.

To reach Gruta dos Brejões, the route starts at the Morro do Chapéu bypass and heads west for 45.6 kilometres along the BA-052 to the turn-off for the village of Soares. This describes only the first section of the route, not the total distance to the cave.

Rock Art and Archaeological Sites

At Lagoa da Velha, about 20 kilometres west of the centre of Morro do Chapéu and near the BA-052, there are rock outcrops with paintings. They depict scenes with animals and people; the area is considered easy to visit. The approximate distance and location near the road offer guidance for planning, but do not replace checking the latest visitor conditions.

Another itinerary runs from Morro do Chapéu to Vila do Ventura, an abandoned former mining town, and continues to a waterfall on the Rio do Ventura. Sandstone outcrops with rock shelters and rock paintings shape the landscape of Vila do Ventura. Alongside the protected areas, traces of early settlement and mining are therefore distinct attractions in their own right.

Wine Visits and Culture

The Rota dos Vinhos da Chapada Diamantina includes winery visits in Morro do Chapéu and Mucugê, where visitors can sample wine and sparkling wine. In the municipality, Vinícola Reconvexo offers guided tours with tastings, while Vinícola Vaz offers tastings of its wines and sparkling wines. Vinícola Santa Maria combines walks through its pioneering vineyards with tastings of artisan wines and snacks, as well as Portuguese cuisine. The visitor experiences therefore vary in focus: guided tours, wine tastings, vineyard walks or food.

The historical heritage offers experiences that differ from the nature and wine destinations. It includes the ensemble of colonial houses on Rua do Fogo and Igreja de Nossa Senhora das Graças. Both are part of Morro do Chapéu’s historical heritage; check current visitor access separately when planning your trip.

Choosing the Right Holiday Rental for Your Trip

When looking for a holiday rental, you can first decide which themes will shape your trip: wineries and tastings, rock art and former mining towns, or the landscapes of the protected areas. The destinations and experiences vary, so the most useful way to search for a holiday rental is to consider the activities you want to make time for.

The thermal pools of Balneário Tareco are in the surrounding area. Access is subject to a fee; confirm current arrangements locally before planning a visit. It is also worth checking access conditions in advance for Gruta dos Brejões. This will help you take different visitor requirements into account when choosing a holiday rental and planning your days.
