Get to know Irará through its festival traditions and the history surrounding Nossa Senhora da Purificação. For travel planning, the Lavagem de Irará is an important date: it has been held in the town for more than 100 years and is celebrated on the last Friday in January. Since the calendar date varies from year to year, check the date and program for the relevant edition before planning your overnight stay.

Lavagem de Irará: Procession and Music

The procession is led by the Charanga de Irará. Baianas carry flowers and perfumed water in vessels; the ritual also includes washing the church and offering participants a bath with perfumed water. Music, flowers, and the water ritual thus come together in the celebration. The schedule and ways to participate may change in future editions. If you are traveling specifically for the procession, check the latest festival information against your travel dates.

Another musical point of reference is the Alvorada da Charanga de Irará. In the 2025 edition, it began at 04:30 at the Filarmônica headquarters and filled the town’s streets with music. This time refers to that edition; check the schedule for the relevant festival if you are planning to attend this early event in a later year.

Festival Program and Manioc Products

The São João de Irará includes a Vila do Forró at the town’s bandstand, with Pé-de-Serra-style performances; check the program for each edition. At one festival, decorations inspired by cordel literature depicted a story told by cordel poet Kitute Coelho. This artistic theme may change in future editions. The Coreto Cultural at the 2025 Lavagem de Irará included a handicraft market, activities for children, shows, and food. These program items were part of that edition and are not a permanent feature of every future Lavagem.

At the Feira da Mandioca, exhibitors offered a variety of manioc products at the town’s supply center. The Feira is considered a traditional event with cultural significance. Manioc products, music, handicrafts, and festival design are among the different cultural themes that shape Irará.

Local History Surrounding Nossa Senhora da Purificação

The settlement from which Purificação dos Campos emerged grew around the temple dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Purificação. An oratory stands in the square named after the saint. The historical account of the original sanctuary also points to a manor house: the sanctuary was built near this house, which stood on the Estrada Real. This road connected the port of Cachoeira with the Sertão of Bahia. Thus, the temple, the history of the settlement, and a historic link between the port and the Sertão are all part of the town’s history.

Culture and Handicrafts in the Municipality of Irará

At the municipal level, the Entrudo da Boca de Várzea adds another folk tradition. It recalls earlier masked carnivals and has been part of the municipality’s culture for more than 20 years. A historical procession traveled from Mombaça through neighboring municipalities to Boca de Várzea; a charanga and masked participants accompanied the procession. If this tradition is a deciding factor for your trip, check current dates and routes.

Craftspeople in the municipality work with ceramics and cipó. Cerâmica de Irará is one of the seven traditional handicraft hubs in Bahia under the Promoart program. The history of the municipality’s cultural institutions also includes Sociedade Lítero-musical 25 de Dezembro, founded in 1954 in the municipality of Irará, which contributes to the population’s artistic, social, and educational development. Festival traditions, handicrafts, and this institution represent different facets of cultural life in Irará.
