Caetité can be explored through three very different cultural points of interest: a restored mansion on the main square, a former home with biographical significance and an archaeological museum. Each place has a distinct focus—on science and culture, on the life of Anísio Teixeira, or on archaeological heritage. This thematic distinction helps you prioritize your interests instead of treating the institutions as interchangeable attractions.

Mansions and Places of Remembrance

Espaço INB de Ciência, Tecnologia e Cultura is located on Caetité’s main square in a restored 19th-century mansion. The science, technology and culture center’s connection with this historic building type gives it a different character from the places of remembrance. The restored former “O Sobrado,” now known as Casa Anísio Teixeira, is the house where Anísio Spínola Teixeira was born and spent his childhood. The Casa houses a Centro de Memória. Within the wider destination of Caetité, it adds a biographical dimension: it preserves the historic architecture and contemporary furnishings, and conveys the customs and traditions of the Teixeira family in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Museu do Alto Sertão da Bahia (MASB) is dedicated to preserving and researching archaeological heritage. Visits to its headquarters in Caetité require advance booking. Visiting hours are listed as Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 12:00 and 13:30 to 17:30; confirm these times before your visit, as they may change.

Cultural Sites and Traditions

The Senhora Sant’Ana Cathedral is part of Caetité’s historic heritage. Casa do Barão de Caetité is protected for its cultural significance. Cine Teatro Anísio Teixeira, located in Casa Anísio Teixeira, serves as an auditorium, cinema and theater. These different functions offer a variety of cultural points of interest: Casa combines biographical remembrance with a Centro de Memória, while Cine Teatro brings film, theater and events together under one roof.

The festival in honor of Senhora Sant’Ana includes a novena and the traditional ox-cart procession, which passes along the city’s main streets. The procession was described as a fifty-year tradition for the 2026 edition. If you would like to include the festival in your travel plans, check the dates for the relevant edition in advance.

Within the Wider Destination of Caetité

Museu do Alto Sertão da Bahia is designed as a territorial museum with multiple sites. Its headquarters are in the municipality of Caetité; it comprises ten museum facilities and also includes the municipalities of Guanambi and Igaporã. Its scope therefore extends beyond a single museum site to include several municipalities.

Nascente do Riacho Pedreira is also part of this regional perspective. The spring lies within Caetité’s urban environmental protection zone. A field survey conducted on August 3, 2023, described the riverside vegetation as fully intact. Atlantic Forest formations predominate in the area; at the same time, it is an ecotone adjoining Caatinga and Cerrado formations. Tico-tico, Sabiá-laranjeira and Canário-da-terra were observed during the survey.

A path near the spring leads to the protected environmental zone of Riacho do Alegre and toward the area surrounding the spring. During the field observation, it was used by local residents, people exercising and students. Boi de Idalino is one of Caetité’s cultural expressions; the July 2 celebrations include traditional equestrian groups. Thus, within the wider destination, nature observation sits alongside a variety of cultural traditions.
