The São João de Araçás and local history give Araças two clear cultural points of interest. In the wider area, sports and off-road events add themes of their own. When planning your trip, it makes a difference whether you want to focus on the festival and the town’s history or are interested in the events associated with Mata Verde. You can begin your vacation rental search by deciding which interests you most.

São João: cultural tradition and street festival

On June 26, 2026, the municipal government described the São João de Araçás as one of the municipality’s most important cultural traditions and named residents and visitors as participants. A municipal report from 2024 records a four-day São João celebration on the town’s streets. The 2024 festival also included the Arrastão do Touro. The municipality’s 2026 description thus adds the tradition’s cultural significance to the specific account of the 2024 festival. If São João is the reason for your trip, check the dates before booking.

Local history and historic sites

According to the account of Araças’ origins, Captain Manoel Dantas Novaes donated one hundred tarefas of land for the construction of a chapel and a cemetery in connection with the Freguesia de Senhor Deus Menino dos Araçás. Local history reports that in 1831 there were two houses of prayer at the site of Aranha. The two accounts emphasize different historical details: one links a land donation to a chapel, cemetery, and Freguesia; the other names a year, the site of Aranha, and two houses of prayer.

Nearby is the Igreja de Santo Antônio in Alagoinhas Velha. Construction began in the mid-19th century but was never completed; in Alagoinhas, it is considered the city’s most significant historic heritage site. Araças’ local history and a historic building in Alagoinhas Velha therefore stand side by side as distinct cultural points of interest.

Araças within the wider destination of Bahia

Araças is part of the Litoral Norte e Agreste Baiano territory, which, according to its regional description, stretches from the coast to the Agreste of Bahia. The Ofício das Baianas de Acarajé is part of Bahia’s broader cultural context and has been listed in the Livro dos Saberes as Brazilian intangible cultural heritage since 2005. This traditional practice involves preparing and selling Baiana foods. Acarajé is made from ground cowpeas, filled with vatapá, caruru, and dried shrimp, and prepared with palm oil. These themes offer a regional perspective on Bahia alongside Araças’ local festivals and historical points of interest.

Sports events around Mata Verde

In the wider area, Balneário Mata Verde lies between Araças and Itanagra in eastern Bahia. It was listed as a venue for triathlon and aquathlon competitions on the 2021 event calendar. Depending on the discipline, participants swam 350, 750, or 1,000 meters, cycled 10 or 20 kilometers, and ran 2.5 or 5 kilometers. The competitions thus cover three distinct disciplines, each with specified distances; the event information relates specifically to the 2021 calendar.

Off-road event and Cavalgada

An event report from 2017 announced the second edition of the Trilha do Araça for August 19. The planned route crossed local farms to Balneário Mata Verde; the event was organized by the local 4x4 club Baratas Off Road. Unlike the triathlon and aquathlon formats, this Trilha describes an off-road route with a named destination. At the Cavalgada do Parque União in Araçás, participants were offered a banquet featuring plenty of churrasco. These two events add an off-road route and a Cavalgada with a shared meal to the picture of São João.
