Anagé’s history can be explored on several scales: the history of its name and municipality spans the period from 1943/44 to 1962, while the Barragem de Anagé in the surrounding area draws attention to infrastructure and the semiarid climate. In town, the Paróquia São João Batista offers a tangible cultural landmark. Reisado and Santo Reis celebrations add local cultural history to these themes. This brings local history, religious architecture and cultural traditions together with the infrastructure history of the surrounding area.

Local history: the name and founding of the municipality

The name Anagé was associated with the district even before the municipality was established. Under State Law Decree No. 141 of December 31, 1943, the district of Joanópolis was renamed Anagé; State Decree No. 12,978 of June 1, 1944, amended the measure. Another step followed on April 5, 1962: State Law No. 1656 elevated Anagé to municipal status and separated it from Vitória da Conquista. The former district of Anagé became the administrative seat. The distinction between the dates is useful: the district’s renaming took place in 1943/44, while it became a municipality in 1962. These were two separate administrative acts, not a single founding date.

Paróquia São João Batista in the town center

In the center of Anagé, the Paróquia São João Batista is located at Avenida Fidélis Botelho 275, Bahia, CEP 45180-000. The restoration of the church building is intended to preserve its artistic fabric. The address and the restoration goal provide different points of reference: the address locates the parish in the town center, while the project focuses on preserving its artistic quality. For travelers interested in religious architecture, this is a distinct highlight alongside the festive traditions.

Reisado and Santo Reis celebrations

A 2010 report described the annual Encontros dos Ternos de Reis at CEASA as part of a project that had been running for seven years at the time. Another historical account from 2010 described the Santo Reis celebrations: they extended from the Igreja Matriz of the patron saint São João Batista around the old market, through the town’s few streets and as far as the open-air market areas. This also outlines the celebrations’ route at the time. A later, specifically dated reference is the 2025 São João program, which included Arraiá dos Gaviões from June 21 to 23.

Barragem de Anagé and the semiarid climate

In the area surrounding Anagé, the Barragem de Anagé was planned to address long dry spells and problems caused by flooding on the Rio Gavião. It also represents adaptation to the challenges of the semiarid climate and the complex relationships between infrastructure, the environment and local communities. This focus differs from the municipal chronicle: while the latter centers on legislation and administrative affiliation, the Barragem concerns climate, water and the interplay between infrastructure and the environment.
