Zvirići can be explored through two clearly distinct themes: the Stećak necropolises at Grabovine, which are part of Ljubuški’s cultural and historical heritage, and cycling route L202, which passes through Zvirići and returns to Ljubuški. This brings local history and a specific cycling option together. When choosing a holiday apartment, you can consider whether Grabovine, a mountain biking ride, or the traditional Zvirićke večeri gathering will be the focus of your stay.
Grabovine and Stećak Heritage
Thirty monuments were found at Grabovine in Zvirići. Twelve monuments at the site are decorated; Grabovine also has 16 box-shaped Stećaks. These three figures describe the number found, decoration, and form—that is, different aspects—and should not be added together to obtain a total. Zvirići is home to Stećak necropolises that are part of Ljubuški’s cultural and historical heritage. For orientation, Grabovine is right next to the R 423 regional road, Teskera–Hardomilje–Zvirići–Prud.
An additional cultural and historical comparison concerns the master workshops: the workshop that worked at the necropolis in Zvirići differed from the one in the upper part of Studenci. This comparison adds another aspect to the examination of the monuments: the different working contexts. Work at the Church of All Saints in Zvirići was completed in 1971 and 1972.
Cycling on Route L202
Cycling route L202 is 33 km long. It passes through Bagin Most, Hardomilje, Zvirići, Studenci, Kravica Waterfall, and Hrašljani, before returning to Ljubuški. The route offers good conditions for mountain biking. The places listed form a specific sequence along the route, while its length provides a clear measure for planning your own trip. If you want to make cycling the focus, L202 offers a different emphasis from the cultural history associated with Grabovine. Those who consider both themes can weigh them as different parts of their trip.
Seasonal Events and Getting There
The Zvirićke večeri traditionally take place at the beginning of August. If you would like to plan your stay around this gathering, check the date for the relevant year so you can coordinate this cultural highlight with your travel dates.
The Zvirići–Prud border crossing is also relevant when planning your journey: a local report from 2017 describes it in the direction of Metković. Check its current operating status before travelling.
