West Herzegovina Canton reveals its distinct character through a variety of natural and cultural landscapes. Lake Blidinje is a striking starting point for taking in the scenery: it lies between the Vran and Čvrsnica mountains, at the bottom of Dugo polje, at an elevation of 1,184 metres. As the largest natural lake in Bosnia and Herzegovina, it is also a geomorphological natural monument. Its location and elevation give the lake a clearly defined place in the landscape.
Mountains, springs and distinctive plants
Blidinje Nature Park encompasses the Čvrsnica and Vran mountain ranges and was officially declared a nature park on 30 March 1995. It is home to around 1,500 plant species, including numerous endemic and rare species. Among its notable plant life is the endemic Munika whitebark pine, which has its largest population here. Blidinje thus brings both the scale of its mountain landscape and its plant life into focus.
Near Široki Brijeg, the Borak valley offers a different kind of landscape: rocky hills frame the valley, where several springs form the Lištica River. Comparing these natural sites reveals different features: a lake between mountain ranges, the plant diversity of a nature park, and a valley where springs give rise to a river.
Two waterfalls, different highlights
Kravica Waterfall is on the Trebižat River, seven kilometres from Ljubuški. It was formed by the deposition of tufa. Swimming and water sports are possible in the pool below the waterfall during the summer months; check conditions locally before your trip. At Kravica, a natural history of formation meets seasonal activities on the water.
Koćuša Waterfall is in Veljaci, in the municipality of Ljubuški. It is five metres high and 50 metres long; historic mills and stamping mills are in the immediate vicinity. While Kravica is characterised by tufa deposits and summer activities in its pool, Koćuša is defined by its dimensions and nearby historic waterworks. The two descriptions therefore emphasise different features without treating the waterfalls as the same.
History in Humac and Široki Brijeg
In Humac, the museum at the Franciscan Monastery of St Anthony of Padua preserves the Humačka ploča, a stone tablet dating from the 12th century. It is considered the oldest surviving monument written in Croatian in present-day Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Gračine archaeological site is also in Humac. Its remains are from a Roman military complex dating from the 1st to the 3rd century; the archaeological area was declared a national monument in 2003. The two sites represent different historical periods: a written monument from the Middle Ages and remains from Roman times.
Another historic site is the fortress “STARI GRAD U LJUBUŠKOM”, declared a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina in October 2003. In Široki Brijeg, the three-day West Herzegovina Fest brings together music, short films, short stories, artistic performances and special musical guests. It is an amateur arts festival held in Sajmište Park by the Lištica; dates vary.
Winter activities and local experiences
Risovac Ski Centre has several ski runs and two ski lifts. It also offers a lift for beginners, a children's toboggan run and a ski school. Seasonal operations may vary. These winter activities are a distinct highlight alongside the natural and cultural sites, which stand out for their scenery, history or water regardless of the season.
Local activities in Blidinje also bring nature and food together. On a guided medicinal herb programme, you collect plants and receive instructions on drying them and preparing tea; a traditional meal is included. Confirm dates and availability in advance. Visits to rural households offer a two-hour opportunity to sample traditionally made products such as cheese or preparations made from pine needles. Confirm the arrangements before your trip. Alongside the landscapes and historic sites, you can also choose guided introductions to herbs and local products.
