Radišići offers a cultural and historical perspective that spans prehistoric fortifications, Roman traces and medieval burial sites. It also has a church with its own architectural history and local sacred traditions. Visitors who want to shape their stay around a specific historical interest can choose from a wide variety of remains: rings of walls, burial mounds, Stećak tombstones and religious sites. This diversity also makes the town an interesting destination for a trip that explores more than one era.

Archaeological Traces from Different Eras

Dračevica in Donji Radišići is an ancient archaeological site with a Roman settlement. In 2015, a Roman well at Dračevica in Donji Radišići-Sadine was documented in a 3D model. The name is therefore associated with both a settlement and a specific structure from Roman history. The well adds an architectural trace to the picture; its documentation as a 3D model provides another way of depicting the site.

Prehistory is reflected in different forms. Obale in Radišići is a prehistoric hillfort with ring-shaped walls; Mrljanovac in Radišići is a prehistoric archaeological site with 13 prehistoric burial mounds. At Obale, the fortification defines the site, while at Mrljanovac, it is the group of burial mounds. The Gradina in Gornji Radišići was also a defensive point on Krstine Hill. Several specific types of early traces can therefore be found side by side, rather than all the sites telling the same story.

The Roman road from Salona to Narona also ran through Radišići. This route connection places the Roman history in a broader context alongside the settlement and well at Dračevica. Different aspects thus come to the fore when considering the area: a settlement, a well, a historic road route and a defensive point on a hill.

Medieval Necropolises and Stećak Tombstones

The medieval remains can be clearly distinguished by their tombstones. Česmine in Donji Radišići is a necropolis with about 20 Stećak tombstones. Krvnica 1 in Radišići is a medieval archaeological site with three Stećak tombstones west of the cemetery. The approximate number at Česmine and the figure of three Stećak tombstones at Krvnica 1 indicate different scales. The tombstones are the specific feature they have in common; the terms “necropolis” and “archaeological site” describe the type of each place.

Church and Sacred Traditions

The Church of Saint Nicholas Tavelić in Radišići is dedicated to this saint. Its construction history has a clear date: by January 1982, the church had been completed and equipped for worship. The church grounds also include Stations of the Cross. The dedication, construction history and Stations of the Cross offer different ways to explore Radišići’s sacred history.

Krvnica has three chapels. Saints Peter and Paul are considered the patron saints of Krvnica Cemetery and Radišići. This tradition adds further religious connections to the Church of Saint Nicholas Tavelić. In 2022, the celebration of Saint Nicholas Tavelić in Radišići included three days of preparation, a solemn Mass and a gathering outside the church.

The differences between the sites are useful when choosing a theme: Obale and Mrljanovac represent different prehistoric traces, while Dračevica and the Roman road highlight the Roman connection. Česmine and Krvnica 1 offer insight into medieval burial sites; the church and local traditions complement this archaeological perspective with sacred history.
