Orašje lies on the right bank of the Sava in predominantly flat terrain. The city combines this riverside location with a distinct cultural profile: its planned layout dates back to the 19th century, and a regularly held film festival is part of its events calendar. This offers different points of interest when planning a trip—from getting your bearings on the road to exploring culture and history.
Location and Getting There
Orašje is about 12 kilometers from the E70 highway or the Županja toll plaza. The city is also located on the important Orašje–Tuzla–Sarajevo–Ploče main road. These road connections offer practical guidance for getting there, without reducing the city to a single route.
A major border crossing between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia is also located in the wider city area. The riverside location and transport connections are two different aspects of getting your bearings: the right bank of the Sava defines the city’s geographical setting, while the highway, toll plaza and main road provide reference points for road connections.
City History and Culture
Orašje was founded in 1863 under the name Donja Azizija. French engineers laid out the settlement in a grid pattern. The date, former name and layout together form a clearly defined founding history that gives the present-day cityscape its historical context.
The “Ivo Gregurević” Cultural Center is a public cultural and educational institution of particular importance to Orašje; it was founded in 1994. Its multifunctional hall has 222 seats. This brings a specific cultural venue and its capacity into focus alongside the city’s history.
The “Dani hrvatskog filma Ivo Gregurević” film festival is held regularly in Orašje. Its 31st edition was planned for 2026. In 2019, the Republic of Croatia awarded the festival an honorary certificate for its exceptional contribution to presenting Croatian national film production.
Tolisa Monastery and Earlier Traces
The Franciscan Monastery of Tolisa, a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina, is located in the wider city area. The Vrata Bosne Museum is housed in the monastery. Its collections include paintings, archaeological finds, coins and textiles; it also has a library. If you plan to visit the museum, check the current opening hours in advance.
The archaeological history of the wider city area also reaches far back in time. There is evidence of the Vinča culture; Neolithic settlements were located in Matići, Bok, Oštra Luka, Tolisa and Donja Mahala. Roman roads and possible settlements in Vidovice, Tolisa, Bok and Oštra Luka are mentioned for the 3rd century AD. The possibility of Roman settlements is explicitly left open. The finds point to the long history of the wider city area.
The Sava Riverbank and Events
The “Na Savu” regatta connects the Sava with a specific event in Orašje: at the 2025 edition, participants covered a route of around 20 kilometers on the river. They used kayaks, canoes, boats, SUP boards, catamarans and other watercraft; the regatta finished on the banks of the Sava in Orašje. The sports and recreation center in Orašje includes swimming pools, football pitches and tennis courts, adding further facilities to the range of water and sports activities.
Orašje’s International Motorcycle Rally is also traditionally held in early May. If you want to combine your trip with the film festival or a motorcycle rally, check the dates for the relevant year in advance. This helps distinguish the city’s enduring cultural and riverside connections from events held at specific times.
