In Tolisa, the monastery, church and museum tell different parts of the story: from 19th-century architecture to paintings, textiles and a library. The region also has protected landscapes, traditional crafts and events whose character varies from place to place. This offers a way to get to know Posavina Canton through specific discoveries, rather than reducing it to a single experience.
The Monastery, Church and Museum in Tolisa
Construction of the Franciscan monastery in Tolisa began in 1862, and work on the parish church of the Assumption of Mary began two years later. The buildings were constructed in the second half of the 19th century; the church was built to plans by architect Josip Vancaš. At 58.0 × 20.0 metres, it was considered the largest Catholic church in Bosnia and Herzegovina at the time. The church and monastery, together with their movable property, form a protected national monument complex of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Their dimensions and building history give the ensemble a clear historical significance, while its present-day importance also lies in its preservation.
The monastery houses the “Vrata Bosne” Museum. Its collections include paintings, archaeological and numismatic cultural heritage, and textiles; it also has a library. A visit therefore takes you beyond the architecture to explore different forms of cultural heritage. Check visiting arrangements before going to the museum.
Protected Places and Landscapes
Historical buildings also form part of the region’s cultural landscape beyond Tolisa. In Odžak, the historic Beledija, also known as Mala vijećnica, was built in 1903 and is protected as a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina. In the centre of Orašje stands the Sultan Abdul Aziz Mosque, known as the Azizija Mosque. It was built in 1863. These three places represent different periods of construction and religious and civic histories, without implying a single, uniform architectural style.
The Starača and Tišina protected areas offer a different perspective on the region. Starača is a protected landscape in the municipality of Odžak and covers 424.4 hectares. Tišina is in the municipality of Domaljevac-Šamac and covers 471.91 hectares. The Government of the Federation confirmed the protected status of both landscapes in June 2024. Posavina itself is a lowland region bordered by the rivers Sava and Bosna.
Vučjak has gentle slopes that reach about 209 metres; regional accounts describe it as the highest elevation in Posavina. The area includes hunting grounds, as well as numerous picnic areas and walking trails. This brings outdoor activities into focus alongside the protected landscapes. The Sava is one of the most important tourism assets of Posavina Canton. River tourism options include fishing, leisure and sports activities, as well as rafting. If you are planning a specific activity, check in advance with a local provider whether it is available.
Crafts and Events
Abonos is a distinctive local material tradition: waterlogged oak wood recovered from river mud at the Begova bara site in Oštra Luka. It is made into objects, jewellery, household items and furniture. The material connects a specific discovery site with skilled craftwork, and is used for everything from small objects to furnishings. This offers a different way to experience local culture from the historic buildings in Tolisa, Odžak and Orašje.
Events also offer insight into cultural practices. The folklore event “Domaljevačka tkanica” has been held for many years. Its 27th edition, in July 2025, brought together numerous visitors and folklore groups from different regions. Visitors could view and buy handicrafts and traditional products from local family farms. What individual vendors offer may vary from one edition to another. In Tolisa, near Orašje, “Dani Tolise” opened for the 19th time in June 2025. If you would like to plan your trip around an event, check the latest dates in advance.
