The medieval defensive tower at the beginning of Marktgasse is Knittelfeld’s oldest building—a striking introduction to the town’s history. But the town can also be explored through its green spaces, water-based activities and outdoor pursuits. When planning your visit, it helps to first consider whether you want to combine culture, relaxation in nature or a range of different experiences.

Green Spaces, Paths and Views

The city park is a 3.5-hectare green space with a wide variety of trees, providing a place to relax. The park also has a mini-golf course, a playground and the Stadtpark Café. Green space and specific leisure activities are therefore found together in one place. Since details about the facilities may change, it is worth checking the latest information about the city park and swimming pool before your visit.

The Brunnerkreuzallee, near Ziegelteich, offers another route into the countryside: it connects Knittelfeld with Brunner Forest in the direction of Tremmelberg. The Tremmelberg route leads to another prominent destination, the 42-metre-high “Turm im Gebirge” observation tower. Built in 1999, the tower is the endpoint of the route. From there, you can look out over Knittelfeld and the surrounding mountains.

History in the Townscape

The Knittelfeld town walk takes you along BahnstraĂźe, Herrengasse, Frauengasse and the main square. This sequence of streets gives your exploration a clear structure. Historic buildings include the cemetery church of St. Johann im Felde, dedicated to Saint John the Baptist. It was built before 1224; it is thought to have acquired its present appearance in the late 15th century.

The plague column in Knittelfeld is also among the town’s historic sights. It features a statue of the Virgin Mary, erected between 1714 and 1718. The Carnival Museum offers a different way to explore history: it houses the entire archive of the BÖF, dating back to the association’s founding in 1962. Architectural history, religious art and carnival culture thus offer different themes to choose from during your stay.

Leisure and Regional Experiences

Knittelfeld’s swimming pool complex covers 20,000 m² and offers indoor and outdoor pools, a spacious sunbathing lawn and a leisure area with a slide. Those interested in bees and beekeeping can explore a different subject at the educational apiary, which opened in 2022 and includes a bee nature trail and a demonstration honey extractor.

The OM Milk Experience World explores milk from farming through its variety and quality controls to processing and enjoying cheese. Guided tours are available Monday to Saturday by telephone appointment. It is therefore important to arrange your visit by phone in advance.

A cycling tour also takes you beyond the surrounding area: “Nimm´s Radl 08 – Knittelfeld Stadttour” crosses the Mur via a “floating bridge” and continues along a gravel path to St. Margarethen. As this route detail may change due to infrastructure changes, check the current route before setting off. This makes it easy to tailor your experience of Knittelfeld’s different sides—town history, green spaces, water-based activities and routes—to your own interests.
