Get to know Knittelfeld through a range of different highlights: historic buildings and museums, leisure activities in the town park and swimming pool, and a walking route through the Lässer Au. If you are looking for accommodation, you can first consider which of these themes you would like to shape your stay. The sights offer a variety of starting points, from architectural history and exhibitions to outdoor activities.

Architectural history and museums

Knittelfeld’s Plague Column was built between 1714 and 1718 under the direction of B. Prandstätter. St. Johann im Felde Church was built before 1224; its present appearance probably dates from the late 15th century. The church therefore brings together an early construction date and a much later—and only tentative—date for its present appearance. The town parish church is dedicated to Christ the King. Knittelfeld’s oldest building is considered to be the medieval defensive tower at the beginning of Marktgasse. These buildings provide different historical reference points, and their origins cannot be reduced to a single period.

The BĂ–F Carnival Museum displays more than 2,500 carnival orders from Europe, the USA, Canada, Africa and Brazil. Its exhibits also include traditional carnival costumes, hand-carved wooden masks and witch costumes. The objects offer different points of interest during a museum visit, with orders alongside costumes and masks. The Knittelfeld Railway Museum displays unusual railway vehicles from a collection of 30 objects on its Ă–BB outdoor grounds. At the Knittelfeld Model Railway, 80 trains, buses, tractors and other vehicles move around. On selected exhibition days, it is presented with its own timetable over 1.5 hours; check the exhibition days before you travel.

The Kulturhaus also adds to the cultural options: the White Hall is used for smaller concerts and talks. If you are interested in a specific offering, you can choose between exhibitions, the model railway and event formats rather than planning all the sights as the same kind of visit.

Town park, swimming pool and outdoor routes

The town park has a minigolf course, a playground, the Stadtparkcafe and plenty of places to relax. The Knittelfeld swimming pool covers 20,000 m² and includes an outdoor and indoor pool, sunbathing areas and a leisure area. Sports, children’s and baby pools offer further differences within the facility. These details can help you choose between a visit to the park and a stay at the swimming pool; check with the municipality for the latest information about the facility before making plans.

The 3.4 km route through the Lässer Au passes side channels, gravel banks, fishing banks, floodplain forests and pools. The named landscape features make this route a different kind of outing from the activities in the town park. As conditions can change with the seasons, take this into account when planning. A 14 km mountain biking route in the municipal forest also leads up to Steinplan. Check the latest information about the forest before setting out. The two routes differ both in their stated activity and in their length; no travel time or level of difficulty is specified.

Practical tips for your stay

Historical town tours are offered at the town archive at Hauptplatz 15. If you would like to plan a tour, check the arrangements before travelling. Knittelfelder Stadthonig is sold at the citizens’ service office in the town hall; check availability before visiting. Current Aichfeldbus timetable information is available online. As timetables are subject to change, it is worth checking the information before planning your journeys.

You can choose between the different options according to your interests: buildings and museums offer cultural highlights, the town park and swimming pool provide leisure activities, and the routes take you through different landscapes.
