Großlobming offers a range of things to explore on a trip: herbal knowledge at the Kräutermensch, architectural and artistic history around the castle and parish church, and trails through the village and surrounding countryside. When planning, consider whether you would like to focus on guided tours and hands-on activities, historical details, or outdoor pursuits. You can choose from the options described according to your own interests.
Herbal knowledge at the Kräutermensch
The Kräutermensch offers guided tours, hands-on workshops and lectures led by experienced herbal educators. The formats have different focuses: they range from guided tours and practical activities to sharing knowledge through lectures. The grounds include 11 beds planted with 230 different herbs. Anyone interested in plants can choose between a guided experience, a hands-on activity or an option focused more on learning.
The castle’s history and architecture
The castle’s history cannot be reduced to a single year of construction. Today’s Großlobming Castle is an extension of a fortified structure that, according to tradition, is said to have already existed in 1050. The Lower Castle was a centre of Protestantism during the Reformation. From 1777, Viennese master builder Ignaz Plaschg carried out a substantial reconstruction of the castle. The fortified structure, religious significance and later reconstruction thus represent different chapters in the village’s history.
The parish church offers a different glimpse of the past: it is a Late Gothic building from the 15th century. The main nave’s vault, the high altar and the two side altars date from the Baroque period. The church thus brings together Late Gothic architecture and Baroque furnishings. The sandstone statues by the Master of Großlobming also form part of its art-historical significance: they are considered major works of the Soft Style in Austria.
Trails through the village, fields and viewpoints
The trails differ in the landscapes they pass through and the destinations they reach. The Großlobming Field Circular Trail runs through the village centre and continues across the municipality of Lobmingtal’s broad fields and meadows. The Lobmingtal Höhenweg connects Großlobming and Kleinlobming. For a bike ride, the Lobmingtal Cycling and Adventure Trail offers a scenic route through Großlobming, following the Lobmingbach stream through Kleinlobming.
For a view over the Judenburg-Knittelfeld Basin, the Murtalblick bench on the Großlobming Panoramic Loop is a specific landmark. Another viewpoint is the rest area by the larch-tree wayside shrine on the forest loop via Reitinger: from here, you can look out over Großlobming and the Seckau Alps rising to the north. These offer two different landscape impressions: views of the basin, and views of the village and mountains.
