The Oberzeiring protected townscape area encompasses the historic town center and the surrounding natural areas. Churches and theater sit alongside trails with clearly identified starting or ending points. If you’re looking for accommodation in Oberzeiring, it helps to first consider which of these interests you want to shape your stay.
Churches, traditions, and townscape
The Elisabeth Church at the cemetery has 14th-century murals. It stands on a rise at the eastern edge of Oberzeiring. A scenic Way of the Cross leads from Oberzeiring to Calvary Hill. The Calvary Church there is privately owned and is not regularly open to visitors; it opens for services on certain days of the year. If you’re planning a visit, check opening times in advance.
A pilgrimage is also part of the town’s religious tradition: Since the plague epidemic of 1715, a pilgrimage from Oberzeiring to Schöder has taken place every year on May 1. This gives the trip a fixed date, while the Way of the Cross and the churches offer other points of interest for a visit.
Theater and mining history
The Oberzeiring Theater THEO has a black box and a studio stage with a combined audience capacity of 180. Each season, the theater produces six original productions. The program includes classics, world premieres, comedies, and family-friendly plays. If you’re planning a theater evening, check which play is scheduled during your stay.
The history of the Zeiring penny is also part of the mining story. At the annual festival marking the start of the season, it was ceremonially presented to the Oberzeiring Mining Museum by means of a deed of gift. The museum is also the starting point for the Mining Trail: its first stop is at the entrance to the museum shop. This means the route’s starting point is also linked to a specific local museum.
Trails with different starting points
The Oberzeiring Historical Circular Trail starts at the market square. The Mining Trail starts at the Oberzeiring Mining Museum, with its first stop at the entrance to the museum shop. If you prefer a circular hike, “Oberzeiring – Circular Hike to the Transmitter” offers a different kind of route: it leads to the highest point of the ridge north of Oberzeiring. The routes therefore differ in their starting points, themes, and destinations.
Another option is a stage of the Mariazell Founders’ Trail. Its second stage leads from Oberzeiring via the Sommertörl to Gaal and continues to Seckau. The route description thus extends beyond the local starting points of the Historical Circular Trail and the Mining Trail. The routes can therefore be considered according to the kind of stay you want, without suggesting that they share a common stretch.
Getting here and finding your way
Oberzeiring is connected to the public transport network. The town can be reached by bus from Judenburg or Hohentauern in about 30 minutes. This is an approximate journey time; check the timetable for your travel date. There are several parking spaces behind the church in the town center.
The Oberzeiring leisure complex has a newly renovated ice rink with floodlighting. This is another local point of interest, alongside the religious and cultural attractions and the trails described above.
