Plan your Zeltweg trip around your interests
Zeltweg offers a range of attractions: Austrian military aviation, Neo-Gothic church architecture and a forest nature trail along the Mur. When planning your trip, you can first decide which focus you would like to prioritise. The Military Aviation Museum combines a historic hangar with technical and historical exhibits; the parish church offers an architectural focus, while the forest nature trail brings together information about nature and activity stations.
Military aviation in Hangar No. 8
The Military Aviation Museum in Hangar No. 8 displays more than 25 aircraft from the history of Austrian military aviation in a 5,000 m² historic hangar. The exhibition also includes a simulator, aircraft engines and jet engines, anti-aircraft guns, radar equipment and other aviation technology. Uniforms and equipment used by the air force, numerous information panels and photographs complement the exhibits. There are also special exhibitions on various topics relating to military aviation in Austria.
Guided tours for groups of 8 to 25 people at the Zeltweg site can be booked online. The museum is accessible via federal highway B 317. Parking is available at the sports centre; from the entrance gate, it is about 400 metres to the museum. This makes it easy to factor the group size, route and walk from the entrance gate into your plans.
The museum’s cultural focus is on technology and the history of Austrian military aviation. Those interested in aircraft will find a variety of exhibits here, from aircraft engines and radar equipment to uniforms, photographs and special exhibitions. The museum can therefore be considered a distinct theme within a trip to Zeltweg.
Parish church and architectural history
Zeltweg Parish Church is also known as the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. It was built between 1904 and 1906 in the Neo-Gothic style, based on plans by architect Hans Pascher. Its construction period, style and architect offer a concrete introduction to the church’s architectural history. Unlike the Military Aviation Museum, the focus here is not on technical exhibits but on architecture. Those choosing cultural themes for their trip can thus distinguish between the history of technology and the history of church architecture.
Forest nature trail along the Mur
The Zeltweg Forest Nature Trail follows varied paths along the Mur. Information about the forest, its flora and fauna makes nature the trail’s main focus. At activity stations, visitors can test their balance, strength and endurance. A large car park at the edge of the forest serves as a starting point.
The trail combines information about nature with an active element: you can focus on nature, the activity stations or both. This makes it different both from the technical exhibits in the hangar and from the architectural history of the parish church. For trip planning, the themes are easy to compare: aviation history, architecture, or forests and physical activity. Which one you want to shape your stay can also help guide your search for accommodation in Zeltweg.
