Berndorf combines unusual school architecture with industrial history and plenty of ways to make your stay active. The Berndorf historic style classrooms, the krupp stadt museum BERNDORF and the town theatre each offer a different focus; trails to Guglzipf, a cycling route through the town centre and the town market complete the picture. This makes it easy to plan around your interests: architecture and history sit alongside exercise, regional produce and a leisure pool.

Architecture and Town History

The Berndorf historic style classrooms feature a unique interior that is unparalleled worldwide: each classroom is designed in a different historical style. They were built in 1908–1909 next to St Margaret’s Church. The changing styles make the interiors of the individual classrooms the central focus. Guided tours of the style classrooms are scheduled for Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays at 2:00 p.m., with no advance booking required. Before travelling, please check whether a tour is taking place on your preferred day.

St Margaret’s Church houses a 20-ton bronze high altar with an over-life-size statue of Saint Margaret. The Church of Mary offers a different architectural impression: it has a single nave and a Neo-Gothic design, and its façade tower is 42 metres high. The Hermann Krupp Temple, in turn, is an Ionic columned temple with a copper roof. The columns, church architecture and altar each make a distinct impression and offer several ways to explore Berndorf’s architecture.

The Berndorf town theatre was built in 1897/98 by Hermann Helmer and Ferdinand Fellner to mark the 50th anniversary of Emperor Franz Joseph’s reign. The permanent exhibition at the krupp stadt museum BERNDORF explores the life and work of the Krupp family and Berndorf’s development into an industrial town. In this way, individual buildings also lead to the town’s industrial history. In 2005/06, the museum moved to the former Consumanstalt in the sausage factory. Special exhibitions are held every year; if you plan to visit one, check its dates separately.

Trails and Activities

Numerous hiking trails and a nature trail lead directly from Berndorf town centre to the observation tower and mountain refuge on Guglzipf. This gives you both a starting point in the centre and specific destinations to consider when planning a hike. As hiking infrastructure can change, it is advisable to check the current route before setting out.

For cyclists, the 29.5-kilometre Triestingtal cycle path runs through the town centre. The route provides a clear framework for planning your ride, while the local cycling network is still being expanded. For walking, the focus is on the hiking trails and nature trail, with their destinations on Guglzipf; for cycling, the stated total length and route through the centre help guide your plans.

Market and Leisure

The Berndorf town market takes place from April to December on the first Saturday of each month. It offers regional specialities such as bread, meat, fish, fruit and vegetables, as well as honey and milk and cheese products. If you choose a Saturday during this period for your stay, you can include the market as a separate activity. Check the date before travelling to make sure it matches your visit.

The Centrelax leisure pool features a 68-metre water slide with light effects. As the facility’s features may change, check the latest information before planning a visit. This will help you decide whether to include this leisure option in your trip.
