Siegenfeld combines hiking trails with a local history that stretches from a Bronze Age settlement to churches and chapels. There are different types of routes to choose from: a 39-kilometer circular hike in two stages and an approximately nine-kilometer section of the cultural hiking trail from Helenental to Heiligenkreuz.

Hiking, Nature, and Routes to Heiligenkreuz

The “G´schichten aus dem Wienerwald” circular hike covers a total of 39 kilometers and has two stages. Its second stage is marked in yellow and leads to the “Weißen Kreuz.” Built in the 16th century, the column stands on the boundary of the founding area of Heiligenkreuz Abbey. The circular hike and the section of the cultural hiking trail are two different routes.

The section of the cultural hiking trail runs from Helenental via Rosental and Siegenfeld to Heiligenkreuz and is about nine kilometers long. A path between Siegenfeld and Heiligenkreuz also passes one of the region’s last wet meadows. The area is one of the last migratory corridors for the endangered hoopoe. This route therefore takes in a special natural area as well as connecting the towns.

Siegenfeld is a destination for hikers and horseback riders. For cyclists, the “Monasteries Emperor Artists Route” runs from Heiligenkreuz onward to Siegenfeld. Conditions on the second stage of the circular hike and any closures may change; conditions and signage on the cycling route may also change. Check the relevant notices before setting out.

Churches, Chapels, and Local History

The predecessor of the present-day church in the town center was built in 1414 in honor of Saint Ulrich of Augsburg. The branch church of St. Ulrich in Siegenfeld was built in 1734. These two construction dates offer an early glimpse into local church history; the Cholera Chapel adds an event from the 19th century.

The first part of the Cholera Chapel was built by the Boldrino family in 1831. They built it in gratitude that the cholera outbreak of 1829 had caused no deaths in their homes. The church of Maria Hilf at the Cholera Chapel was enlarged in 1855 because of the many pilgrimages. The chapel contains sculptures of Saint Benedict and Saint Andrew.

A much earlier settlement was established at Burgstall, 200 meters west of the Cholera Chapel: around 800 BC, a Celtic settlement dating to the Bronze Age was founded there and enclosed by an earthen rampart across an area of about three hectares. This site offers a very different historical perspective from the churches and chapels. Siegenfeld’s history stretches from the Bronze Age settlement at Burgstall to the chapels of the 19th century.

A late Baroque chapel built in 1871 served a special purpose: before the deceased were taken to Heiligenkreuz, they were given a final blessing on Siegenfeld soil. The “Wegerl im Helenental” also has a cultural connection: it is associated with the song of the same name by Alexander Steinbrecher.
