If you are looking for accommodation in La Bajada, you can plan your trip on two scales: around leisure activities in the surrounding area and around other destinations in the wider Department of Coronel Pringles. This lets you choose different priorities, such as nature, outdoor activities and culture.

Relaxation and scenery in the surrounding area

A 2017 official description mentions fishing, camping and walks outdoors at the nearby Dique Antonio Esteban AgĂĽero. It describes access to the water at the time via the dam wall and a slope used as a beach. Check current access conditions before visiting.

Nearby El Trapiche lies in a valley in the Sierras de San Luis and is crossed by the RĂo Trapiche. Vegetation, rivers and streams, and the preservation of the natural environment shape the area. Embalse La Florida is located at the entrance to El Trapiche; its maximum extent is approximately six kilometres. The river and reservoir therefore offer different scenic features in the surrounding area.

El Trapiche is also associated with a summer cultural event: since 1984, the municipal government has organised the Fiesta de Los RĂos there every summer, a festival with provincial significance. The programme includes cultural activities such as painting and handicraft exhibitions, as well as sporting competitions, including triathlons, marathons and bicycle races. Dates and programmes may change from one edition to another; check in advance if you would like to include the festival in your travel plans.

Nature and outdoor activity destinations in the Department of Coronel Pringles

The wider destination of the Department of Coronel Pringles offers a range of options for active days out. On a guided excursion to Mina Esperanza, visitors venture 300 to 400 metres into an old ore vein, pass through tunnels and see stalactites and geological formations. As visiting hours may change, check the current arrangements in advance.

Virorco offers mountain biking and cycling routes. The Virorco–Las Pircas circuit is 6.36 kilometres long and has 170 metres of elevation gain. At the Río Amarillo, visitors can search for gold manually under the guidance of local people; check before travelling whether this activity is available on site. The Caminito de la Zorra follows the river and offers views of the mountain landscape. The ascent to Cerro Tomolasta is considered easy to moderate and offers panoramic views of the natural surroundings.

Culture, crafts and history

The Department of Coronel Pringles brings together a variety of cultural attractions. The Museo de la PoesĂa collects the works of Juan CrisĂłstomo Lafinur. The Museo Parador Minero collection includes more than 650 minerals, including rock crystal, onyx, amethyst, lapis lazuli, quartz and malachite. One rock crystal weighs 35 kilograms; the exhibits on display may change.

The region’s architectural history is another discovery: El Castillo is a former estancia main building, built in 1850 by Bett. Spanish influences, the appearance of a medieval fortress, a small tower and ruins feature in descriptions of the building. At Templo Santo Domingo, one altar is made of onyx marble.

Jewellery, sculptures and decorative objects are made from green-veined onyx from Cantera Santa Isabel, near Cerro Tiporco. At the Fiesta del Mármol Ónix in January, craftspeople display works made from this green-veined onyx; check the dates and programme in advance. Another cultural landmark is Gruta de Inti Huasi: the cave, around 8,000 years old, is associated with the Ayampitin culture and is recognised as part of the historical and cultural heritage of San Luis.
