El Amparo is part of the municipality of Estancia Grande. When planning your trip, it is also worth exploring the municipality’s other offerings and destinations in the Department of Coronel Pringles: the municipality combines hiking and trekking with traditional pulperías, while the department offers additional nature, mining and cultural attractions.

Hiking, Pulperías and Things to Do in Estancia Grande

Visitors can hike and trek in the natural surroundings of the municipality of Estancia Grande. The Camino de las Pulperías offers a cultural complement. It passes through rural, tradition-rich establishments such as Pulpería del Negro, Memenhue and La Salamanca. Traditional dishes along this route include grilled chicken and San Luis empanadas filled with meat and spices. This makes outdoor activities and regional food culture two distinct options.

The municipal facilities also cater to a range of interests: the Estancia Grande municipal grounds have soccer, tennis, pádel and volleyball courts, as well as a swimming pool and a water slide. If you plan to visit these facilities, check current visitor access in advance. There is playground equipment for children in the central square. The Estancia Grande Polo Club has facilities for 350 horses and four playing fields; these details describe the club’s facilities, not an opportunity to participate.

Places to Stay in the Municipality

The municipality of Estancia Grande has guesthouses and cabins, as well as sites where visitors can camp and stay overnight. There are several types of accommodation to choose from. Check availability for your travel dates before making firm overnight plans.

Nature and Activities in the Department of Coronel Pringles

The Department of Coronel Pringles offers more opportunities for outdoor activities and scenic experiences. Virorco has mountain biking and cycling trails. The Virorco–Las Pircas loop is 6.36 kilometers long, with an elevation gain of 170 meters. Virorco is also a mountain stream with clear water, home to rainbow trout.

The Caminito de la Zorra runs along the river and offers views of the mountain landscape. The ascent of Cerro Tomolasta provides panoramic views across the natural surroundings; the climb is considered easy to moderate. Those who prefer a guided underground excursion can consider Mina Esperanza: on the tour, visitors venture 300 to 400 meters into the old ore vein, pass through tunnels and see stalactites and geological formations. As this is a guided excursion, it is advisable to check the current schedule before making plans.

Culture, Mining and History

The Museo de la Poesía houses the works of Juan Crisóstomo Lafinur. The collection at the Museo Parador Minero includes more than 650 minerals, including rock crystal, onyx, amethyst, lapis lazuli, quartz and malachite. One rock crystal weighs 35 kilograms; the exhibits may change. El Castillo offers another way to explore history: the former main building of an estancia was built by Bett in 1850. It has Spanish influences and, with its fortress-like appearance, a small tower and ruins, is reminiscent of a medieval castle.

The Gruta de Inti Huasi also brings together natural and cultural history. The cave is about 8,000 years old, is associated with the Ayampitin culture and has been recognized as part of San Luis’s historical and cultural heritage. The altar in Templo Santo Domingo is made of onyx marble. The Cantera Santa Isabel quarry, near Cerro Tiporco, is cited as the source of the green-veined onyx used to make jewelry, sculptures and decorative objects.

Regional festivals include the Fiesta de Los Ríos: the municipality of El Trapiche has held it every summer since 1984, and it is a provincial-level festival. At the Fiesta del Mármol Ónix in January, artisans display jewelry, sculptures and decorative objects made from green-veined onyx. If a festival is a deciding factor for your trip, check the current dates and program in advance.
