The Templete Casa Natal Gral. San Martín preserves archaeological remains of the house in Yapeyú where José Francisco de San Martín was born on February 25, 1778. This direct connection to San Martín’s biography offers a starting point for exploring other historical themes of the town.

San Martín and the town’s historic character

The Templete is surrounded by an extensive park and lies in a scenic setting on the Río Uruguay. The combination of the monument, park, and riverside location gives the visit a distinctive spatial setting without replacing the historical significance of the preserved site of the house.

Yapeyú’s streetscape also helps visitors get their bearings in its history: quiet streets with characteristic lampposts and colonial houses shape the town, and centuries-old facades have been preserved on the houses. The Higuerón adds another biographical connection. The tree is more than 300 years old, and San Martín used to play beneath it as a child. The birthplace and the tree thus point to two different aspects of his childhood.

Museum and Jesuit-Guaraní history

The Museo Histórico Sanmartiniano displays historical documents, Jesuit archaeological objects, a model of the Battle of San Lorenzo, and original objects from the former reduction. The collection thus ranges from written records and archaeological finds to a battle model and objects from the reduction.

The Centro de Interpretación Jesuítico Guaraní takes a different approach: it is presented as a gateway to the Jesuit-Guaraní missions. Guided tours there explain the collaboration between the Jesuits and the Guaraní, as well as shared agricultural, artistic, and religious techniques that shaped the region. Visitors interested in seeing exhibits will find a suitable thematic introduction at the Museo; those interested in this collaboration and its techniques can take a tour at the Centro focused on these topics.

The two institutions thus offer different perspectives on Yapeyú’s history: the Museo focuses on documents and objects, while the Centro interprets shared cultural and practical developments. Together with the Templete and the Higuerón, they offer both a biographical and a mission-history perspective without treating the two themes as interchangeable.

Visiting hours and how to get there

The Templete Casa Natal Gral. San Martín is open to visitors daily from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Check these visiting hours again before your trip to make sure they apply to your planned visit.

Yapeyú can be reached from the city of Corrientes via National Routes 12 and 123; the stated distance is 400 km. Check the route information before setting out.

A cultural event

In 2026, Yapeyú held the traditional Festival del Libertador. At midnight, the centerpiece was the singing of the Argentine national anthem in remembrance of the 176th anniversary of José de San Martín’s death. For this year’s edition, the cultural event was thus explicitly linked to the memory of the national hero, with the midnight ceremony serving as the main program highlight.
