The province of Corrientes lies between the Uruguay River to the east and the Paraná River to the west and north; both rivers form natural boundaries of the province. They provide a clear geographical reference when planning a trip. Corrientes also offers a range of ways to explore its natural and cultural attractions, from national parks and river activities to music, historic sites and urban cultural routes.

National Parks and Planning Your Visit

Parque Nacional Mburucuyá covers 17,086 hectares and was established in 2001 by Law No. 25.447/01. Parque Nacional Iberá lies within the Reserva Natural del Iberá in the province of Corrientes. When visiting Parque Nacional Iberá, your planned route is an important guide: depending on your route, contact the tourist information offices in San Miguel, Ituzaingó, Concepción, Mercedes or Colonia Carlos Pellegrini in advance.

Boat trips, kayaking and horseback riding depart from the access points to Parque Nacional Iberá; there are also several hiking trails. This gives you a choice of activities on the water and on foot or horseback. If you are planning a specific route, direct your inquiry in advance to the relevant information offices.

Rivers, Riverbanks and Wildlife Conservation

Sport fishing is possible in the province on the Paraná, Uruguay and Río Corriente rivers, as well as in numerous inland lagoons. Regulations and licensing requirements may change; check the latest information before fishing. In Corrientes Capital, Avenida Costanera General San Martín, also known as Costanera Norte, runs for about 2.5 kilometers along the banks of the Río Paraná. The vast scale of the rivers and this specific stretch of riverfront in the capital offer two distinct geographical points of reference.

In the wider region, Centro de Conservación Aguará is located a few kilometers from Paso de la Patria along Ruta Nacional N.º 12. The center is dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and conservation of native wildlife, combining biodiversity protection with environmental education. Guided tours introduce visitors to the specialists’ work restoring animals endangered by, among other things, illegal wildlife trafficking, poaching, being kept as pets or road accidents.

Cultural Routes and Events

Corrientes Capital is known as the “City of Murals”: more than a hundred works of art are spread across squares, parks, promenades and public spaces. The number may change as new works are added. In Parque Cambá Cuá, themed walking routes explore, among other subjects, African American and Guaraní culture, as well as Chamamé. These offerings highlight different aspects: the city as a whole, its public artworks and specific themed routes through the park.

The Fiesta Nacional del Chamamé takes place every January in the city of Corrientes. It celebrates Chamamé, which UNESCO has recognized as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. “Los Caminos del Carnaval” covers a different geographical area, taking place in January and February in more than twenty towns across the province of Corrientes. In Mburucuyá, the Festival del Auténtico Chamamé Tradicional, held every February, puts traditional Chamamé in the spotlight. Exact event dates and programs may vary from year to year; check the schedule for your travel dates.

The Circuito Religioso de las Siete Iglesias in the city of Corrientes is offered as a tourist and cultural experience throughout the year and is especially significant on Maundy Thursday. Since the date of Maundy Thursday changes every year, it is best to check when it falls in your travel year.

Historical Heritage in the Wider Region

The Corredor Jesuítico Guaraní connects Gobernador Virasoro, La Cruz, San Carlos, Santo Tomé, Alvear and Yapeyú with the historical heritage, landscapes and traditions of the Guaraní and Jesuit legacy. In Yapeyú, Centro de Interpretación Jesuítico Guaraní offers guided tours exploring the history and cultural heritage of the Jesuit-Guaraní missions.

Also in Yapeyú, Templete Casa Natal Gral. San Martín preserves archaeological remains of the house where José Francisco de San Martín was born on February 25, 1778. Visiting hours may change; check them before your visit. This offers a distinct cultural and historical focus alongside Corrientes’ events, urban cultural routes and nature destinations.
