Saladas Department offers a way to combine three distinct travel interests: the history of Saladas, time at the lagoons, and festivals with their own focus. This can help you plan your stay and find a vacation rental: consider whether you would rather prioritize the Cabral Museum and historic center, activities on the water, or a particular event date.
Cabral Museum and Historic Center
In Saladas, the Museo Histórico Nacional “Juan Bautista Cabral” is located in the house where cavalry grenadier Juan Bautista Cabral lived from 1805 onward. The mansion dates from the late 18th century. It is considered national and provincial historic heritage, is an example of colonial architecture, and is designated a National Historic Monument. The house thus combines a personal connection to Cabral with architectural and monument history.
The museum displays objects relating to regional history in five rooms. These include documents from the 18th century and weapons from the 19th century; relics from the former Convento de Santo Domingo are also highlighted. Since the display may change, check which objects are currently on view before your visit.
An exhibition plan presented in 2025 as part of a modernization project envisioned a chronological account of Saladas’ history, from its settlement through the 19th century. Plaza Cabral and the San José Church are also part of a walking tour of Saladas’ historic center. This means there are other historic stops in the town center in addition to the museum collection.
Lagoons and Activities on the Water
Nearby, Laguna Soto and Laguna Sánchez are among the featured lagoons. Both offer opportunities for fishing and recreation; at the pier at Laguna Soto, you can take a walk and watch birds. For time by the water, you can choose a specific walk with birdwatching or more general fishing and recreation opportunities.
The opportunities for walking and birdwatching from the pier complement the fishing and recreational activities mentioned for both lagoons. If you are planning an outing, check the current conditions at the location, as facilities may have changed.
Festivals with Different Focuses
The Fiesta Provincial de la Miel y Expo Saladas promotes the local consumption of honey and beehive products, directly from producer to consumer. The Complejo TurĂstico Municipal is the venue for the Fiesta Provincial de la Miel. It is located on Laguna Soto, at the intersection of Alfredo Miranda and DĂaz Colodrero streets. The festival offers a different focus from the museum: honey and beekeeping products take center stage.
At the celebration of San Baltasar on January 6, a procession with a horseback ride goes from the area of the Biblioteca Municipal to the chapel at Predio Polo Borda. A rosary is held there, accompanied by live music. While the museum is a place for history and collections, San Baltasar is an event tied to a specific date. If you want to plan your trip around it, confirm the specific event program in advance.
