Reddish cliffs along the Paraná, a historic temple and a city shaped by cultural history give Empedrado Department a range of travel highlights. When choosing accommodation, it helps to keep the named locations in mind. In El Sombrero, National Route 12 is the main access road; it connects the town north to Riachuelo and south to Empedrado. Empedrado itself is also located on National Route 12.

Cliffs and the Paraná Waterfront

The Barrancas de Empedrado stretch along much of the Río Paraná shoreline and are considered the town’s main natural attraction. Reddish earth, native vegetation and the river shape the landscape. Erosion caused by the Paraná, rain and wind formed tall natural walls with layers of different colours and textures. There are also caves, projections and other unusual geological formations, shaped in part by sedimentary material. The cliffs thus combine a striking riverside landscape with a specific geological history: their forms reflect the forces that shaped this landscape.

At the foot of the cliffs, Playa Espigón I lies on the Río Paraná waterfront, within Camping Municipal Gerónimo Merello. Volleyball and foot-tennis courts are set up daily on the beach in Empedrado. If you want to include some activity in your stay, you can distinguish these beach activities from a trek: during the 2026 season, the “Barrancas del Paraná” trek starts daily at 6:30 p.m. at the Gruta de la Virgen on the campsite in Empedrado. As times may be seasonal, check the schedule before making plans.

Building History and Festivals in Empedrado

The current temple of the Parroquia del Señor Hallado was built of stone and inaugurated in 1911. It is considered one of the city’s most important religious and architectural landmarks in Empedrado. Teatro Dora adds another dimension to the city’s cultural heritage: it was built in 1916 and became an important venue for social and artistic life in Empedrado.

Since 1967, the Fiesta Provincial de los Estudiantes has established itself in Empedrado as a youth gathering. Its traditional format included parades, performances, the election of a queen and the traditional torch. The patron saint festivities for Nuestro Señor Hallado combine religious activities with expressions of local tradition and devotion. The temple, theatre and festival history offer different highlights: sacred architecture, social life, and religious and cultural tradition.

Fishing and Choosing a Location

Sport fishing for surubí, dorado, boga and pacú is practised in Empedrado. Fishing spots near the cliffs and in channels and side arms of the Paraná are considered good. This extends the landscape experience beyond the riverside formations to the waterways and their side arms; the fish species and fishing locations mentioned give fishing its own distinct focus.

Choose a hotel based on the location you want and check the seasonal schedule for the trek. This will help you weigh the landscape, culture and activities according to their importance to your trip.
