Las Flores combines a rural landscape between two lagoons in the Río Salado basin with natural and cultural attractions. The Botanical Garden and Parque Plaza Montero offer outdoor activities, while museums, theaters and historic buildings tell the story of the town. You can bring nature experiences and local history together in one trip.

Nature and Time Outdoors

Laid out in 1977, the Jardín Botánico is home to more than 200 plant species. Its distinctive features include a Japanese bridge and hybrid carp from the Jardín Japonés de Escobar. At Parque Plaza Montero, Laguna del Difunto Manuel offers a different setting for activities: visitors can go canoeing, take long walks and bike rides, and observe wildlife. Options range from a visit to the botanical garden to spending time by the water.

History, Collections and Architecture

The Las Flores Obelisk was erected in 1939 to mark the centenary of the Partido de Las Flores. The El Mirador Building takes visitors back to the mid-19th century: it was built in 1850 using bricks that Rosas had donated, and served as a hospital during the Mitre Revolution of 1874. The building was declared historic cultural heritage and retains its original structure.

The Iglesia Nuestra Señora del Carmen was built in 1873 by architect Pedro Petrocchi. It is considered an architectural and religious-cultural landmark of the city and is currently undergoing restoration. The Teatro Español is also part of the cultural heritage: founded in 1895, it was one of the region’s first buildings built for theatrical purposes. The theater retains its original stage traps and reception rooms and is considered part of the cultural heritage in the city center.

The Museo de Ciencias Naturales y Archivo Histórico preserves more than 1,000 paleontological, ethnographic and mineralogical items. Its holdings also include a collection of Ecuadorian ceramics and Antarctic fossils. The Museo de Ciencias Naturales “Florentino Ameghino” was founded in 1971, after expeditions along waterways in the Río Salado basin unearthed Pleistocene mammal fossils for its collection.

A range of other buildings and institutions offer further insights into the city’s history. The Escuela Normal Mixta de Maestros was founded in 1917 and is considered an educational icon of the city and Argentina. The Salon Rojo Municipal is part of Las Flores’s former administrative building. It was designed by Petrocchi, is inspired by the Palace of Versailles and retains original furniture from Paris.

Markets, Wine and Events

At the Feria Agroecológica, small producers offer homemade food, honey, baked goods, seasonal vegetables, beer and sweets every Tuesday and Saturday. In rural Las Flores, Bodega La Blanqueada produces artisanal wine. It’s worth checking the market days again before your trip.

The Encuentro de Payadores “Juan Ramón Aristegui” takes place every year as part of the city’s patron saint festivities in honor of Virgen del Carmen. The Encuentro de Teatro Del Borde is also held annually, bringing together theater groups from Argentina and abroad. Check the theater festival dates before your trip if you’d like to plan around it.
