Lake Kashiba is located in Mpongwe in the Copperbelt and is a collapsed lake. Visitors use it for birdwatching, catch-and-release fishing, picnics, camping and swimming. Birdwatching and fishing offer a different focus from swimming or camping; the lake brings these different activities together in one place.

Lakes and nature experiences

Another natural destination in the surrounding area is Chembe Bird Sanctuary, about 30 km from Kitwe. Visitors can walk or drive around the lake and through the surrounding woodland. Rowing boats can be hired at the lake for fishing or birdwatching; check availability in advance. Unlike Lake Kashiba, Chembe combines trails around the lake and through the forest with the option of birdwatching or fishing from a rowing boat.

Chimfunshi Wildlife Orphanage is a chimpanzee sanctuary in Copperbelt Province. It broadens the nature-focused offerings to include chimpanzee conservation and appeals to travellers who are interested in animal and species conservation as well as lakes and birds.

At Mindolo Dam, about 7 km southwest of Kitwe city centre on Kalulushi Road, there is a boating club, a swimming pool and a bar. The dam offers fishing, camping, a game park and boating. If you plan to include these facilities or activities in your itinerary, check the current conditions with the operator.

Museums and mining history

The Copperbelt Museum in Ndola was founded in 1962 and has three exhibition galleries: geology, ethnography and children's toys. The range of subjects brings nature, social perspectives and children's toys together in one museum. The education department develops programmes for museum visitors. Exhibition details may change; if a particular gallery is important to your visit, check the latest information in advance.

In Zambia, the Copperbelt Museum focuses on mining history and serves to document and preserve the country's mining history. By comparison, the Livingstone Museum in Zambia has five permanent galleries covering archaeology, ethnography, natural history, history and David Livingstone.

Luanshya is home to the oldest copper mine in Zambia. In Chingola, a permit from the mine office is required to visit the mine. As the process may change, confirm the requirements with the office in advance. Nchanga Golf Course is also located in Chingola.
