On the left bank of the Red River, Yên Bái combines a varied riverside landscape with places of remembrance from different chapters of the city’s history. On your trip to Yên Bái City, you can focus on monuments, pagodas, and temples, or combine your visit with the market and the area around the river. These places do not tell the same story: alongside the 1930 uprising, they include a speech from 1958, religious heritage, and events from before independence.

River Landscape and Orientation

Yên Bái’s landscape includes riverbanks and alluvial plains, low hills, valleys, and streams interspersed among hills. Fields stretch along the Red River. These varied landscape features give the place a different setting from a purely riverside description: the river, valley, and hills together form part of the city’s character. If you would first like to get your bearings while planning your trip, it helps to consider the riverside location and the historical sites as different aspects of your visit.

The transport routes can also be understood in geographical terms. An international railway connects Hải Phòng, Hanoi, Yên Bái, Lào Cai, and Yunnan in China. The Red River waterway runs downstream from Yên Bái to Hanoi and onward to the port of Hải Phòng; upstream, it reaches the Lào Cai international border crossing. For specific travel arrangements, check the latest schedules: the routes described indicate directions and connections, not a timetable for your trip.

Monuments to the History of the City and Country

A central place of remembrance is the memorial to Nguyễn Thái Học and those who died in the 1930 Yên Bái uprising. It is located in the 30-hectare Yên Hòa Park in Nguyễn Thái Học ward and commemorates Nguyễn Thái Học and the soldiers of the uprising. It was recognized as a national historical monument under Decision 177/QĐ-VHTT dated March 5, 1990. The site can be reached by road, rail, or waterway. Its significance can therefore be considered both as a specific place of remembrance and in the context of the uprising.

The Lễ đài Sân vận động monument in Hồng Hà ward preserves another chapter of history: it recalls Hồ Chí Minh’s speech to workers and the ethnic groups of Yên Bái on September 25, 1958. The Nhà Kèn flower garden, also called the flower garden of Yên Bái provincial capital, is also in Hồng Hà. The province’s provisional revolutionary committee was established there on August 22, 1945. These places commemorate different dates and events; together, they invite visitors to look beyond a single chapter of history.

The Bến Âu Lâu historical monument also lies on the Red River and was recognized as a national historical monument on August 7, 2012. The left bank of the river is in Nguyễn Phúc ward, and the right bank is in Âu Lâu commune in Yên Bái City. This location on both sides of the river is a useful reference point when exploring the monument and its riverside surroundings.

Pagodas, Temples, and Religious Heritage

The Bách Lẫm Pagoda and Temple complex preserves historical artifacts from the Sơn Vi culture and is a spiritual and cultural site. Believers, residents, and travelers visit to explore the site and engage with its culture, history, and faith. The pagoda also houses the stone stele “Thần Phật bi hậu ký,” which dates from the second year of the Duy Tân era, 1908. Artifacts from the Sơn Vi culture and a dated stele offer two specific ways to connect with the complex’s cultural heritage.

Ngọc Am Pagoda is also part of the city’s religious and spiritual monument complex and is a provincial monument. Its reconstruction on the historic foundations was approved on April 22, 1996. A building permit for a construction area of 365 m² was issued on May 20, 2021, for its repair and enhancement. These two dates mark different stages in the building’s history. Tuần Quán Temple in Yên Ninh ward is also a provincial historical and cultural monument.

A festival is held at Tuần Quán Temple each year on the third day of the third lunar month, attracting residents as well as visitors from the province and beyond who come to worship. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the date for the year in question: the lunar calendar date does not fall on the same Gregorian calendar date every year. Outside the festival, the temple remains a distinct way to connect with the city’s religious heritage.

A Market Visit as Another Highlight

Yên Bái Market, also known as Chợ Ga, offers visitors a wide range of goods. It complements the historical and religious sites with a practical reason to explore city life and the local selection of goods. When planning your stay, you can combine different interests: the history of the uprising and other events, pagodas and temples, or a visit to the market. Which highlights you choose depends on which sides of Yên Bái you would like to discover on your trip.
