Explore Hương Hóa through a range of themes: the museum area at Sân bay Tà Cơn features large military objects, while Bắc Hướng Hóa Nature Reserve protects rare species and river headwaters. Other highlights include the summit of Sa-Mù Pass, which stands more than 1,000 meters high, two waterfalls in different locations, and a restored Vân Kiều festival. If you are looking for a focus for your trip, history, nature and culture each offer different points of interest.

Historic Sites Compared

The museum area at Sân bay Tà Cơn displays aircraft, helicopters, artillery guns and tanks. These large objects give the site a distinctive character. Lao Bảo Prison offers a different historical point of reference. It is located at the end of Lê Thế Tiết Street in Lao Bảo town, in Hướng Hóa District. Built in 1908 on a site of about ten hectares, it was recognized as a national historical and cultural monument on January 25, 1991. At Tà Cơn, the exhibits take center stage; at Lao Bảo, the construction date, approximate area and monument designation provide historical context.

Nature Conservation and Landscape

Bắc Hướng Hóa Nature Reserve protects rare animal and plant species. The animals include the white-cheeked pheasant, Hà Tĩnh langur, saola, giant muntjac and striped rabbit. The reserve also protects the headwaters of the Bến Hải, Rào Quán, Hiếu and Sê Păng Hiêng rivers. Its conservation work therefore combines the protection of biodiversity and river headwaters.

The summit of Sa-Mù Pass is more than 1,000 meters high. For the waterfalls, their locations help distinguish Chênh Vênh from Tà Puồng: Chênh Vênh is on the western route of the Ho Chi Minh Trail in Hướng Phùng Commune. Tà Puồng is in Trăng Tà Puồng hamlet in Hướng Việt Commune. Both sites are in Hướng Hóa District, but are located in different communes.

A Festival and Its Setting

The Vân Kiều Mừng lúa mới festival was restored in Chênh Vênh hamlet in Hướng Phùng Commune. This brings two distinct themes together in Hướng Phùng: Chênh Vênh Waterfall as a landscape attraction and the festival as a cultural point of interest. Their shared location connects them without diminishing their distinct features.

Quảng Trị in a Broader Context

The wider destination of Quảng Trị includes additional historic sites. The restored citadel, also known as Cổ thành Quảng Trị, is located in Quảng Trị town. It is associated with the 81-day battle of 1972 and is now a memorial site with a central stele honoring fallen soldiers. In Vĩnh Linh District are the Vịnh Mốc Tunnels, a special national historical monument. Visitors can explore the underground living and fighting spaces used by local people during the war and learn about the region's history and culture. The citadel and tunnels add to the picture of Quảng Trị; the natural, cultural and historical attractions described above are the focus in Hương Hóa.
