Đồng Hới combines twelve kilometers of coastline with historic sites, a river that shapes the urban area, and regional cuisine. When planning your trip, you can focus on different things: time at the beach, the history of Quảng Bình Province, or local dishes. When choosing a hotel, it is worth first deciding which of these aspects you want to shape your stay.

Coast and Cityscape

The coast of Đồng Hới stretches from Quang Phú to the edge of the Bảo Ninh urban area. At Nhật Lệ Beach, you can swim in the gentle waves or spend time on the sandy beach. Quang Phú Beach is considered peaceful and tranquil, and lies beneath long stands of casuarina trees. The Nhật Lệ River winds through Đồng Hới and shapes the urban area—the coast and river thus form two distinct aspects of the cityscape.

An older official profile describes Bảo Ninh Beach as relatively undeveloped and used mainly by local residents for relaxing and swimming. Since this assessment is dated and development conditions may change, check local conditions if you plan to visit this beach.

Historic Sites and Culture

Quảng Bình Quan is located in Đồng Hới. This historic site is an ancient fortification system that the Nguyễn rulers had built from 1630 to protect Phú Xuân and that was later largely restored to its original form. Its construction, military purpose and restoration give the site a clear historical significance. The Lũy Đào Duy Từ, also known as Lũy Thầy, likewise represents the area's military architectural history: it is located in Hải Ninh and Bảo Ninh in Đồng Hới, as well as in Quảng Ninh District, and is recognized as a national monument for its historical and military architectural significance.

Bảo tàng Quảng Bình is located on Hùng Vương Street in central Đồng Hới, in the area of the historic Thành Cổ Đồng Hới site. It preserves more than 15,000 photographs and artifacts relating to the culture and history of Quảng Bình Province across several historical periods. Its thematic scope therefore extends beyond the city to the province. If you are interested in local traditions, the annual Cầu Ngụ Festival in Bảo Ninh is also worth noting. Religious ceremonies are accompanied by activities such as boat races, Bông dancing and Chèo cạn performances. Check the exact festival dates locally if you want to plan your trip around them.

Regional Cuisine

At Chợ Đồng Hới, you can discover regional dishes such as Bánh Xèo, Cháo Canh, Bánh Canh and Kẹo Cu Đơ. Most stalls are open early in the morning and in the afternoon; individual stalls' availability may vary. Other specialties of Quảng Bình Province that visitors can try in Đồng Hới include dried squid, dried fish, peeled shrimp and Khoai Kẹo. The market and these regional specialties offer different ways to get to know the food culture of the city and province.

Getting There and Choosing Where to Stay

Đồng Hới is accessible via National Highway 1A, the North–South railway line and the Ho Chi Minh Road. The city also has Đồng Hới Airport, which is listed as having flight connections to Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
