In Vu Ban District, the Phủ Dầy complex represents a blend of religious heritage and distinctive architectural history. It is located in Kim Thái Commune in Vụ Bản District and comprises Phủ Tiên Hương, Phủ Vân Cát and the mausoleum of Liễu Hạnh. The complex honours Liễu Hạnh, one of the Four Immortals in the Vietnamese spiritual pantheon. Together, these three sites form a shared cultural heritage.
Phủ Tiên Hương: Architectural History and Orientation
Phủ Tiên Hương was built during the Lê-Cảnh-Trị period, from 1663 to 1671, and has been restored several times. The complex comprises 19 buildings with a total of 81 large and small rooms. It faces southwest, towards the Tiên-Hương Mountains. Its construction date, repeated restorations, scale and orientation each offer different clues for understanding the complex: they tell the story both of its long history and of its relationship with the surrounding landscape.
Festivals Following the Lunar Calendar
The recurring Phủ Dầy Festival programme includes torchlight processions, processions carrying sacred texts, the Hoa trượng hội, spiritual medium performances and folk games. Individual events may vary from year to year. One specific date is the sixth day of the third lunar month: on this day, a procession to request sacred texts travels from Phủ Tiên Hương to Gội Pagoda. Elderly residents, spiritual mediums and many local people and visitors from elsewhere take part.
The market tradition is also tied to the lunar calendar. Hội chợ Viềng takes place on the eighth day of the first lunar month in Kim Thái Commune and Nam Giang Town. Chợ Viềng in Trung Thành Village, Kim Thái Commune, is held during a narrow window: it takes place only once a year, from midnight on the seventh day until the morning of the eighth day of Tết. The market is also associated with the worship of Liễu Hạnh. When planning, it is worth checking the lunar dates for the relevant year, as the corresponding Gregorian dates change.
Other Cultural Heritage Sites
In Cao Phương, Liên Bảo Commune, stands the temple dedicated to Trạng nguyên Lương Thế Vinh. It has been recognised as a national historical and cultural monument since 1990. Another site with religious significance is Chùa Hổ Sơn, also known as Quảng Nghiêm Thiền Tự. This historical and cultural site lies at the foot of Hổ Sơn Mountain in Liên Minh Commune and is dedicated to the worship of Princess Huyền Trân.
The people of Hổ Sơn Village hold an annual festival in memory of Huyền Trân on the ninth day of the fourth lunar month. The traditional religious artefacts are also part of the site's history: records describe 27 worship statues and 27 old religious objects, including statues of two princesses and four imperial decrees. The condition and display of the collection may change. During a visit, it is worth bearing in mind both the site's religious significance and its historical commemoration of Huyền Trân.
Agriculture and Traditional Handicrafts
A selection of experiences described in 2024 is available at the Núi Ngăm ecotourism area (Ngăm Resort). Agricultural activities include growing vegetables, fishing, catching ducks and cooking in a clay pot. The description also includes visits to the livestock area, botanical garden and medicinal herb garden. Traditional crafts listed include pottery, making paper flowers, and weaving with rattan and bamboo. Specific activities may change.
Vụ Bản brings together a range of themes: religious sites and their architecture, festivals tied to lunar calendar dates, historical remembrance, and agriculture and handicrafts. You can plan your explorations around your interests and check the festival dates separately for the year you wish to visit.
