With 150 kilometres of coastline, gentle waves and clear turquoise water, Phú Quốc is first and foremost a seaside island destination. But its shoreline is more than a uniform scene: white-sand beaches, coral reefs, forest trails and places of maritime worship give your trip different focal points. You can discover nature and cultural history in a variety of ways.
From a Long Coastline to Distinct Beachscapes
At Bãi Dài, a 15-kilometre coastline stretches from Gành Dầu to Cửa Cạn. The clear water reveals colourful coral reefs, and snorkelling over the reefs is one of the activities available at the beach. Bãi Khem in the south of the island has a different coastal character: its curving beach has white sand and clear blue-green water. Next to the beach is Giếng Tiên, a freshwater spring that never runs dry.
The vantage point can also shape the impression of a coastal visit. At Mũi Ông Đội, you can watch both sunrise and sunset from the same spot. Phú Quốc thus offers a variety of beach and coastal experiences: Bãi Dài is defined by its length and reefs, Bãi Khem by the colour of its sand and its curved shape, while at Mũi Ông Đội the changing day takes centre stage.
Forest Trails, Waterfalls and Marine Nature
The cable car to Hòn Thơm is 7,899.9 metres long. It starts at An Thới station, passes over Hòn Dừa and Hòn Rỏi, and ends on Hòn Thơm in Phú Quốc. As operating hours can change, check the timetable before your visit.
For a short walk through the forest, the trail to Suối Đá Bàn stream starts at the entrance to the tourist area. From there, the walk takes about 15 minutes. Treat this as an estimate, as trail conditions may vary. Suối Tranh offers a different kind of hike: an easy walk leads to the waterfall, where you can take a refreshing dip.
Gành Dầu is one of four protected areas on Phú Quốc where camping, birdwatching and hiking are possible. The Gành Dầu trail passes through large trees and follows a flat route. For snorkelling, the Gành Dầu coral garden is another option: its colourful reefs close to shore are well suited to it. At Starfish Beach near the village of Rạch Vẹm, you can observe starfish in clear turquoise water.
If you are looking for a view over the sea, there is a viewpoint along the mountain trail at Hàm Ninh. This trail is intended for experienced hikers. Hiking on the island therefore varies depending on the destination and level: an easy walk leads to Suối Tranh waterfall, while the Hàm Ninh mountain trail takes experienced hikers to a view over the ocean. The natural landscape also includes the Phú Quốc Marine Protected Area, covering more than 40,909 hectares within Phú Quốc National Park.
History and Maritime Culture
Phú Quốc Prison, also known as Nhà lao Cây Dừa, is located in An Thới in the south of the island. It is recognised as a nationally significant historical monument and is open to visitors. Visiting hours are listed as 07:00 to 17:00; check the hours before your visit, as operating details may change. As a cultural and historical site, the prison offers a different way to experience the island than its coastal and natural destinations.
At Dinh Cậu Temple, religious significance comes together with a view over the harbour: the lighthouse also serves as a shrine dedicated to the Sea Goddess, and visitors can watch the sunset over the harbour from there. Before setting sail, seafarers and fishermen pray to the Sea Goddess at Dinh Cậu Pagoda. Every year, the Dinh Cậu Festival takes place there on the 15th day of the tenth lunar month, at Dinh Cậu on Nguyễn Trung Trực Street in Dương Đông. The date in the Gregorian calendar varies from year to year.
Fishing Village and Regional Products
Hàm Ninh is a fishing village whose daily life has also changed with tourism. In the past, residents made their living mainly from fishing; today, selling seafood and souvenirs to tourists is an additional source of income. Here, you can experience both the fishing village’s traditions and the trade aimed at visitors.
Two local products also offer an insight into local agriculture and food culture. Phú Quốc fish sauce has a tradition spanning more than 200 years and has a recognised designation of origin in Europe. On Phú Quốc, you can visit pepper farms to learn more about pepper cultivation. Together with the fishing village of Hàm Ninh, these subjects offer a glimpse into different aspects of island life—from fishing and its products to pepper cultivation.
