Hoan Kiem Lake, also known as Hồ Gươm, is a natural freshwater lake in Hanoi, located in Quận Hoàn Kiếm. Its lakeside gardens reveal an everyday side of the district: you can watch locals doing their daily exercise and practising tai chi there. On a small, tree-shaded island on the north side of the lake stands Ngoc Son Temple, also known as the Temple of the Jade Mountain. Together, the lakeside and temple offer two different glimpses into the district’s landscape and cultural heritage.

The Old Quarter and Cultural Heritage

The Hanoi Old Quarter is a national historical and cultural monument. Its 36 streets are described as a “living museum” of the founding and development of the imperial capital of Thăng Long. This description draws attention not only to individual buildings, but also to the cultural significance of the Old Quarter as a whole.

Ca trù is among the traditional art forms preserved and revived in Quận Hoàn Kiếm. It also continues to be part of public life today. Xẩm is also present in the Old Quarter: performances are regularly held at historic sites in the Hanoi Old Quarter area on weekend evenings. Dates may vary. Those interested in music and living traditions can explore these art forms alongside the historic sights as a distinct way to experience the district’s culture.

Museums and History

The Vietnam National Museum of History displays nearly 8,000 valuable exhibits on Vietnamese history at two locations, from prehistoric times to the present day. One of the locations is at No. 1 Tràng Tiền Street in Quận Hoàn Kiếm. There, the displays cover the period from prehistoric times to the end of the Nguyễn dynasty in 1945. As museum operations may change during renovations, check the latest information before visiting.

The Hỏa-Lò Memorial offers a different historical perspective. The prison was built in 1896 by the French colonial authorities. The memorial includes a monument, a reconstructed model of prison life, a guillotine, and exhibitions featuring artefacts and documentary images. At the Vietnamese Women’s Museum at 36 Ly Thuong Kiet Street, the focus is on artefacts, traditional clothing, handicrafts, mementos and photographs. They illustrate the role of Vietnamese women in history and society.

The Hanoi Opera House also tells the story of the city’s architectural history: it was built from 1901 to 1911, modelled on French opera houses and influenced by the architecture of modern European opera houses. Together with the museums and historic sites, it offers another perspective on the different periods and cultural influences visible in Hoan Kiem District.

Performances and Local Life

The Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre is located at 57B Đinh-Tiên-Hoàng Street. It presents water puppet shows 365 days a year, with five to seven performances listed daily. Schedules may change, so it is worth checking showtimes before your visit. This traditional puppetry offers a different cultural focus from the museums and historic buildings.

The vibrant street food scene is also part of contemporary cultural life in Quận Hoàn Kiếm. Cultural gatherings take place at Heritage House 87 Mã Mây, where traditional handicrafts are also presented. So, alongside conservation and collections, everyday culture and crafts are also part of what you can explore in the district.
