At the Bảo tàng Chiến thắng Điện Biên Phủ, the panoramic painting “Chiến dịch Điện Biên Phủ” unfolds on a grand scale: it is 132 meters long and 20.5 meters high. The museum’s layout is also part of the experience. The ground floor houses reception, learning, interaction, and other service areas; the upper floor contains the permanent exhibition and panoramic gallery.
Memorial Sites and History
Beyond the museum, you’ll encounter other places connected with the Điện Biên Phủ battlefield. The headquarters of the Điện Biên Phủ campaign in Mường Phăng is a prominent part of the specially protected national historical site of the Điện Biên Phủ battlefield. Pha Đin Pass is also part of the historic site complex. Đồi A1, meanwhile, is a well-known attraction within the battlefield’s historic memorial site and was also a strategically important hill.
In Thành Bản Phủ, visitors can pay their respects to the deceased, learn about the history of the citadel, pray, and explore the grounds. Display cases there contain ritual wine bowls, a military saber, spearheads, and a plan of the citadel; the items on display may change. Tháp Mường Luân is another historic landmark: it was recognized as a national monument on February 9, 1991.
Caves and Landscapes
Pa Thơm Cave is a national scenic monument. It is about 350 meters deep and has nine large and small chambers with numerous stalactites and stalagmites. The Thẩm Váng Cave, by contrast, is known for an archaeological discovery: stone axes, stone grinding pestles, and some fossilized animal bones were found there. Điện Biên thus brings together cave landscapes and archaeological sites, each with its own story.
Those interested in natural areas will find a different scale at Mường Nhé Nature Reserve: it covers 31,216 hectares at elevations above 1,500 meters and features diverse vegetation and rare animal species. Pa Thơm Cave can be described in terms of its depth, chambers, and stalactites and stalagmites; Mường Nhé, by contrast, is defined by its vast area, elevation, and biological diversity.
At Pá Khoang Lake, visitors can take a boat to the islands and Đảo Hoa. This adds a trip on the water as a distinct way to experience the province’s natural attractions—a different way of taking in the landscape than in the caves or the nature reserve.
Views and Special Occasions
Cột cờ A Pa Chải combines a complex of structures with sweeping views: it includes a ceremonial courtyard, a walking path, and a central flag tower that is 45.19 meters high. From there, visitors can take in the entire Vietnam–Laos–China tri-border area. On July 13, 2026, Điện Biên Province recognized Cột cờ A Pa Chải as a tourist site.
A 2019 description of the province places A-Pa-Chải Market at the A Pa Chải–Long Phú border crossing, in the border area between Mường Nhé District in Điện Biên, Vietnam, and Giang Thành District in Yunnan, China. Check the latest information on market days before your trip.
In March, Điện Biên Province holds the Hoa Ban Festival, a celebration shared by its 19 ethnic groups. It is linked to the anniversary of the start of the Điện Biên Phủ campaign on March 13. If you’re planning to attend the festival, check the specific event dates in advance.
