Thủ Dầu Một can be explored through a range of cultural highlights: traditional lacquer craftsmanship, pagodas, historic buildings and striking architecture. If you plan your trip around your interests, you can focus on production processes, religious art, historical remembrance or a large-scale leisure destination.

A long tradition of lacquer craftsmanship

The traditional lacquer craft of Tương Bình Hiệp has a history of nearly 300 years of development and is listed as national intangible cultural heritage. In the lacquer craft village, visitors can observe individual steps in the lacquer-making process. The focus is therefore not only on finished lacquerware, but also on how it is made. If you are interested in crafts, this offers a different way to experience Thủ Dầu Một’s culture than its religious architecture and history.

Pagodas and religious art

Hội Khánh Pagoda was built in 1741 and recognized as a national historical and cultural monument on January 7, 1993. A seven-story, 27-meter-high tower was added in 2007. The main hall contains nearly 100 gilded wooden statues, including arhats and depictions of the Ten Courts of Hell. The pagoda also preserves woodblock prints, writings, scrolls, documents, poems, and works on geography and traditional medicine. It stands at the foot of a hill beneath four dipterocarp trees that are several hundred years old. Its construction history, religious visual art, written heritage and described setting give this place several distinct cultural dimensions.

Chùa Bà and Chùa Tây Tạng also represent distinct religious traditions. Chùa Bà is located at 4 Nguyễn Du Street and was moved to its present site in 1925. It is a religious site in the Chinese faith tradition, where Thiên Hậu Thánh mẫu, the Mothers of the Five Elements and the couple Bổn Đầu Công are among those worshipped. Chùa Tây Tạng is a rare pagoda in the style of Tibetan esoteric Buddhism. It houses a statue of Bodhidharma woven from the hair of thousands of worshippers. Phú Cường Cathedral, at 104 Cách Mạng Tháng Tám Street, adds another architectural highlight with its striking modern neo-Gothic style.

History in different places

Phú Lợi Prison is located on 1 tháng 12 Street in Phú Lợi Ward. It is a national revolutionary historical monument, protected since July 10, 1980. As an educational visitor site, it introduces visitors and student groups to patriotic traditions and the history of Vietnam’s wars. Historical remembrance is therefore the focus here.

The old house of Trần Văn Hổ at 18 Bạch Đằng Street in Phú Cường Ward offers a different perspective. It was built in 1890 and completed in 1893. These dates give the historic residence its own architectural history, while Phú Lợi Prison focuses on conveying the history of war and remembrance. The two sites can thus be distinguished by their respective historical focus.

Architecture and a large-scale leisure destination

Gió and Nước Café combines wind power with the cooling effect of water and was built using nearly 7,000 bamboo poles as building material. It has received numerous awards from Vietnamese and international architectural associations. The focus here is an architectural idea: the interplay of wind, water and building materials. This distinguishes it from historical collections and religious buildings.

The Đại Nam tourist area in Hiệp An Ward covers approximately 476 hectares and includes, among other things, temple complexes, fortifications and castles, mountains, hotels, lakes and an amusement area. The area is approximate; this mix makes Đại Nam a different kind of visitor destination from individual historic buildings or religious sites. If you are planning a visit, check the latest information on access and operating hours beforehand.
