Zulia offers two distinct starting points for exploration: the certified Ruta Turística Islas Felices and the theatrical history of the Teatro Baralt in Maracaibo. The islands on the route are in the Municipio Almirante Padilla. The theater offers a glimpse into the city’s cultural history. When organizing travel ideas, you can distinguish between an island-focused tourist attraction and a historically rooted cultural experience.

The Ruta Turística Islas Felices is certified by Venezuela’s Ministry of Tourism. A monthly visitor count of 5,000 tourists was reported for its islands in 2024; this figure may change over time. It gives a time-specific indication of scale, but is not a forecast for any particular travel date.

The Teatro Baralt: Stage and Early Film History

In its early years, the Teatro Baralt in Maracaibo presented operas, zarzuelas, and dramatic performances. This mix brings early theater history to life: it encompasses different forms of stage performance rather than just one genre. The focus is therefore on a historical chapter in the theater’s history, not its current program.

A precise date connects the theater to the history of film in Venezuela: the country’s first film screenings took place here on January 28, 1897. Alongside the early stage forms, this marks a national milestone in cinema. For your travel planning, these are two distinct cultural points of interest: an interest in theater and performances on the one hand, and in the history of film on the other.

Venezuela on a Broader Scale

The following examples are part of the broader destination of Venezuela and complement the view of Zulia with other landscape and cultural experiences. Morrocoy National Park lies in the coastal region of FalcĂłn state. This marine and coastal ecosystem covers more than 32,000 hectares. The landscapes mentioned include land areas such as Cerro Chichiriviche, cayos, shallow-water zones, and mangrove channels.

Cueva del Indio is also in Morrocoy: the open cave is located on Cerro Chichiriviche within the national park and can be reached by traveling through mangrove channels. The Morrocoy tourist experience begins at the piers; traditional peñero boats depart from there for the cayos. The cave and boat trip represent different nature experiences in the broader Venezuelan context.

Coro and Caracas offer further cultural perspectives. Coro was founded in 1527 and has around 602 historic buildings. In Caracas, the campus of Ciudad Universitaria brings together numerous buildings and functions in a clearly organized ensemble featuring masterpieces of modern architecture and visual art. A historic building stock and a campus ensemble can thus be viewed as two different forms of cultural heritage.

A different scale of landscape can be seen in Canaima National Park in southeastern Venezuela, along the border with Guyana and Brazil. The park covers three million hectares; about 65 percent of its area is covered by tepui table mountains. In contrast to Morrocoy’s marine and coastal ecosystem, the focus here is on the vast area and the tepuis. These examples from across the country provide a broader framework for travel interests, while the island route and the Teatro Baralt turn the focus to Zulia.
