Cumaná combines a Caribbean city beach with cultural venues and a rich city history. Playa San Luis brings beach and water sports opportunities into the urban setting; Casa Museo and Teatro Luis Mariano Rivera offer different cultural experiences. There are also historic sites and the Río Manzanares, which runs through the city center. You can tailor your stay to your interests, whether that means the sea, literature and performances, or history.

Playa San Luis: Caribbean beach in the city

Playa San Luis is on the Caribbean Sea in Cumaná and is a city beach. At more than 1,500 meters long, it is the longest city beach in Sucre state. Swimming, diving and other water sports are possible there. Its size and range of activities make the beach a destination in its own right for anyone who wants to spend time by the sea during their stay.

Cultural venues and city history

Casa Museo Andrés Eloy Blanco offers a cultural program featuring poetry readings, exhibitions and literary workshops. This brings literature and exhibitions together, while Teatro Luis Mariano Rivera has a different event profile. The theater is in the heart of Cumaná, in the former Cine Paramaunt, opposite Plaza Miranda. It hosts cultural performances of regional folklore, as well as music and film festivals, theater and dance events. Its location opposite the plaza gives you a clear landmark; the former cinema’s name also preserves the memory of the building’s previous use. If you want to plan your visit around a particular reading or performance, check the specific dates in advance.

In Parque Ayacucho, the Escultura del Gran Mariscal de Ayacucho stands on the banks of the Río Manzanares, next to Museo Ayacucho. The urban complex around the statue was inaugurated on October 28, 1890. It was built on the ruins of an infantry, artillery and cavalry barracks that had been destroyed in the earthquake of July 15, 1853. The Convento de San Francisco is also part of the city’s history: it was declared a national monument in 1960.

The Río Manzanares winds through the center of Cumaná. The writer Don Alberto Sanabria described it as a sacred river steeped in legends for the people of Cumaná. Along the river, you will encounter both a distinctive feature of the cityscape and a cultural interpretation that Sanabria associated with it.

A riverside experience in a rural setting

For a different kind of water experience, look to the rural community of Río San Juan, through which the river of the same name flows. The community is about a 20-minute drive from Cumaná. The river has deep swimming pools and numerous spots where sancocho can be prepared over a wood fire or on a grill. Unlike Playa San Luis, this is a riverside experience in a rural setting, with options ranging from swimming pools to preparing sancocho. You can choose between a city beach and water sports on the Caribbean Sea, or a riverside escape in the countryside.
