In the Médanos de Coro, Falcón features a vast landscape of dunes; the Cuare wildlife refuge protects mangroves and marshes; and historic Coro is home to significant cultural heritage. These different themes give you several ways to discover the region: through landscapes and activity, nature watching, or architecture and history.
Dunes and trails in Parque Nacional Médanos de Coro
The “Dunas de Arena” are the main attraction of Parque Nacional Médanos de Coro, where you can go sandboarding. Los Médanos de Coro extend for 30 kilometers in length and 5 kilometers in width across the municipalities of Miranda, Colina, Falcón, and Carirubana. These measurements describe the extent of the dune area. The Sendero Interpretativo GP/Sup Carlos Flores offers a different scale: it has five stations and begins at the park’s main entrance. Sandboarding and the interpretive trail thus offer two different perspectives on the same park.
At the main entrance, you can try typical cocadas, goat’s milk dulce de leche, and various refreshing drinks; check locally for the current offerings. For directions, a route description published in 2025 mentions the Troncal 3 along the Morón–Coro national highway. From the city of Coro, Avenida Independencia leads to Paseo Monseñor Iturriza and the park’s main entrance. Check road conditions before setting out.
Mangroves and birdlife at Refugio de Fauna Silvestre Cuare
Refugio de Fauna Silvestre Cuare protects the Golfete de Cuare, a bay of mangroves and marshes. It is an important stopover for migratory birds from different continents. Dense stands of red, black, and white mangroves protect the Golfete; their stilt roots create a sheltered spawning and nursery area for thousands of fish. The area can therefore be understood both through the migratory birds’ stopover and the role of the mangrove forest.
The salt flats and lagoons of Cuare are also part of the nature experience: they are a place to see pink flamingos (Phoenicopterus ruber). This offers a clear contrast when choosing what interests you, compared with the sand dunes: the focus here is on a bay of mangroves and marshes, birds stopping over, and fish habitats.
Coro and the cultural history of Falcón
The Centro Histórico de Coro was founded in 1527 and recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. With its adobe buildings, unique in the Caribbean, Coro is a well-preserved example of local traditions combined with Spanish Mudéjar and Dutch building techniques. Its distinctive character lies in this combination of different architectural traditions, visible in the city’s adobe buildings.
The Ruta Turística Arqueológica Médanos de Coro offers another perspective. It showcases the settlement of the Indigenous people led by Cacique Manaure. Parque Arqueológico y Paleontológico de Taima Taima is located in the Municipio Colina in the state of Falcón, covers 1,480 hectares, and was declared a Sitio de Interés Cultural on June 10, 2005.
Hiking, caves, and regional origins
There are different options for hiking, too: Cerro Santa Ana is suitable for hiking. In the Médanos, Ecorutas offers hikes focused on environmental education and nature conservation.
Haitón del Guarataro offers an adventurous experience with a visit to Venezuela’s deepest limestone cave. When visiting Cueva del Indio and the Santuario de la Virgen in the limestone cliffs of Cerro Chichiriviche, keep one important detail about getting there in mind: both are accessible only by boat, and the boats dock directly at the cliffs. Check local conditions before setting out.
You can also learn about regional production at a specific location. For Cocuy Pecayero, agave is harvested, roasted, and distilled in Parroquia Pecaya, Municipio Sucre, Falcón.
Choose the right focus for your trip
If you’re looking for hotels in Falcón, your personal interests can help guide your plans: Would you rather explore the dune landscape and its activities, focus on Coro’s architecture and history, or discover the mangroves and birds of Cuare? This question can help you tailor your trip to your interests without prescribing a set itinerary.
