Activities and nature in the Federal Dependencies

The Federal Dependencies offer different aspects of travel to explore: the Los Roques Archipelago is known for its wide range of activities, Isla de Aves draws attention to birdlife and turtles, and Isla La Tortuga is surrounded by varied coastal landscapes. You can choose your focus based on whether you mainly want to discover water sports, wildlife, scenery or regional cuisine.

The Los Roques Archipelago is part of the Federal Dependencies travel destination. There, tourism providers accredited by the Ministry of Tourism offer sport fishing, kitesurfing, snorkeling, diving, stand-up paddling and windsurfing. Birdwatching and nature photography are also among the offerings. If you have a specific interest in mind, you can therefore approach Los Roques through either its sporting activities or its opportunities for observation and photography. The availability of individual providers may vary; before planning, check whether your preferred provider is available.

Birdlife and turtles on Isla de Aves

The Isla de Aves Wildlife Refuge was designated on August 23, 1981. The island is a nesting site for large colonies of pelagic birds, including Giotas (noddies) and Gaviotín (“Tiotío”). Another aspect of its wildlife has a clearly defined season: from July to October, hundreds of giant turtles swim from various parts of the Caribbean and Atlantic to this beach on Isla de Aves, solely to lay their eggs there. For nature enthusiasts, the timing is also a distinguishing factor: July to October is the expressly stated period for the turtles’ migration.

Coastal landscapes and cuisine

Isla La Tortuga offers a different landscape focus: the island is surrounded by cliffs, mangroves, reefs, beaches and cays. In terms of choosing what interests you, this contrasts with the activities in Los Roques and the wildlife of Isla de Aves: here, the variety of surrounding coastal landscapes takes center stage.

The cuisine in Los Roques adds another dimension. Visitors can enjoy dishes featuring marine animals as well as a wide variety of seafood and crustaceans. This adds a culinary focus to the activities and nature experiences. Specific offerings may vary. If you also choose destinations based on regional cuisine, you can include this maritime focus in your considerations.

Venezuela in a broader context

In the wider travel destination of Venezuela, Morrocoy National Park offers a distinct perspective on coastal landscapes. It is located in the coastal region of Falcón state and covers more than 32,000 hectares as a marine and coastal ecosystem. Its landscapes include Cerro Chichiriviche, cays, shallow-water areas and mangrove channels. The open Cueva del Indio lies within the park on Cerro Chichiriviche and can be reached by traveling through mangrove channels. The tourist experience in Morrocoy begins at the piers; traditional peñero boats travel from there to the cays. In the broader Venezuelan context, Morrocoy thus offers a distinct focus on coastal landscapes, mangroves and boat trips.
