The wooden suspension bridge, held by strong cables, is La Coronilla’s landmark. It crosses the Andreoni Canal, which runs through the seaside resort. It has safety barriers, and no more than five people may cross at a time. Signposts and paths lead to the bridge from the main road. If you plan to use this access route, check the signs on site. For larger groups, the limit means crossing the bridge one group at a time.

Beaches and seasonal choices

La Coronilla has eight kilometres of open ocean beaches. Playa Las Maravillas is one of them, close to town. During the summer months, it is La Coronilla’s most visited beach. The beach is known for its firm sand and designated areas for sports activities; it is also suitable for longer walks. The summer detail can help you choose when to visit, while the sand, sports areas and walks offer different ways to enjoy a beach stay.

A historic trace on the beach

The boiler of the Porteña can be seen on La Coronilla beach, south of the main beach entrance and opposite the fishermen’s houses. The steamship Porteña was deliberately run aground on the beach in 1873. The visible boiler and the date of the event give this stretch of coast a tangible historical connection. If you are looking for history as well as beaches and scenery, the boiler offers a clear point of interest.

Sea turtles and sea lions

The beaches of La Coronilla are an important feeding area for sea turtles. A sea turtle release for children and adults is usually held in the afternoon at Playa Las Maravillas. For planning purposes, it is worth distinguishing between the two: the feeding area covers the beaches of La Coronilla, while the release is an activity at Playa Las Maravillas that usually takes place in the afternoon. If you would like to plan around it, check the date in advance.

Cerro Verde is located near La Coronilla. It belongs to the Bañados del Este UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and is part of the Cerro Verde and La Coronilla Islands protected area, designated for habitat and species management. At the Mirador panorámico de fauna marina en el Cerro Verde, you can observe sea lions resting on the rocks. The nature experiences are therefore different: sea turtle feeding areas on the beaches, and the chance to see resting sea lions from the lookout.

Rocha on a larger scale

Across the wider Rocha destination, the protected landscape of Laguna de Rocha covers approximately 22,000 hectares, including 7,200 hectares of water, hills, plains, the coastal strip and part of the oceanic platform. The lagoon is a habitat and refuge for endangered birds; more than 220 bird species are found there, including resident and migratory birds. This regional landscape broadens the nature perspective with a distinct feature of Rocha: a protected lagoon with extensive land and water areas and diverse birdlife.
