Pan De Azúcar can be explored through specific cultural and nature-related themes: at Plaza 19 de Abril, you’ll encounter works of art connected to local artists and the writer Álvaro Figueredo. Historic buildings and collections add to this perspective, while Parque Municipal Zorrilla de San Martín offers a diverse plant life. For planning your trip, you can choose between art in public spaces, local history, activities and nature.

Art and Activities

A bust of the writer Álvaro Figueredo, created by local artist Robert Arriola, is located at Plaza 19 de Abril. “La Mesa,” a work by local artist Ruben Marín, can also be seen in the plaza. The two works have different focal points: one centers on a literary figure, while the other is another work by a local artist. The plaza was redesigned and described as the country’s first accessible plaza.

Red Ánimas offers hiking, cultural activities and educational workshops. The Casona Maidana at Calle Aiguá 835 is the home of Red Ánimas. Some courses and workshops are also held at the Biblioteca y Casa de la Cultura “Ricardo Leonel Figueredo.” These are different kinds of offerings: one combines hiking, culture and education, while the other provides courses and workshops in a library and cultural center.

Green Spaces and Landscape

Numerous native and non-native plant species can be seen in Parque Municipal Zorrilla de San Martín. Landscape designer Piegas Oliú brought plants from Canada. This connects the park’s plant diversity with a detail from its design history. The green space offers a different focus from the artworks in the plaza or the courses and workshops at the cultural centers.

Local History and Collections

The building that houses the Casa de la Cultura y Museo Álvaro Figueredo dates from 1878 and belonged to Francisco Bonilla, one of the town’s first residents. The building’s history is thus linked to a figure from the town’s early history. The name of the house refers to Álvaro Figueredo, whose bust stands in the plaza.

The Museo Jacinto Vera collection includes religious objects from the former chapel dating from 1877, the four founding books, documents, photographs and parish furniture. Objects from the former chapel are displayed alongside written and visual materials and furnishings from the parish. This collection offers a different perspective on local history than the story of a single building.

The Museo de Pinturas al Aire Libre, del Tango y el Candombe displays works by numerous local artists and artists from the Río de la Plata region on the town’s walls. Restoration of these works is currently underway. Compared with the two named works in the plaza, this open-air museum brings together contributions from a larger group of artists. If murals are part of your trip plans, check on the current status of the work in advance.
