Powell Marsh Wildlife Area covers about 4,303 acres. It includes a large peat bog area with several unique wetland and plant communities. More than 213 different bird species have been observed there to date; that number may continue to grow as more observations are documented.
There is an observation point at the north end, and the area also has four designated parking areas. These specific landmarks add to the picture of the extensive marshland. Wabasso Lake offers a different natural highlight: this 49-acre, deep seepage lake has diverse and unusual aquatic flora.
Trails and Activities Throughout the Year
Vilas County has 700 miles of snowmobile trails and nearly 90 designated multi-use trails. Trail lengths may change as the trail network is updated. For planning, it is therefore helpful to distinguish between the different types of trails rather than reading these figures as a single type of route.
In northwest Vilas County, the WinMan Trails cover more than 1,300 acres of private and public land. They are open year-round, but suitable activities vary by season: in winter, the trails are suitable for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and fat biking; during the other seasons, for hiking and mountain biking. If you plan around a particular activity, this seasonal breakdown is a useful guide.
There is also a clearly identified road route: Rustic Road 60 is the only official Rustic Road in Vilas County. It connects County Highway M south of Boulder Junction with County Highway K/N in Star Lake. The route can be planned around these two named endpoints, without assuming a particular driving time.
At Van Vliet Hemlocks, there is a parking area and trailhead on East Van Vliet Road. Road conditions may vary, so take that into account when planning your drive. The Rice Creek area lies between Round Lake and Big Lake, and boat access is via Round Lake Road. The information therefore distinguishes specifically between the trailhead and boat access.
Museums and History
Founded in 1959, the Vilas County Historical Museum displays historical artifacts, photographs, and memorabilia about the history of Vilas County and the surrounding areas. One exhibit reaches further back in time: the original snowmobile, built in 1924. This places the museum’s founding year alongside an object dating from much earlier.
The George W. Brown, Jr. Ojibwe Museum & Cultural Center shares the history of Lac Du Flambeau and has one of the most comprehensive collections on local history. Its offerings include seasonal workshops, interactive exhibits, cultural programs, and a world-record sturgeon. Exhibits and programs may change seasonally. Tours are available for groups of five or more by advance notice; confirm current arrangements directly with the museum before visiting.
To choose what interests you, these destinations offer different points of connection: nature observation, seasonal trail activities, or exhibits on local and county history. For a group tour at the George W. Brown, Jr. Ojibwe Museum & Cultural Center, advance notice is an important part of planning.
