The Harley-Davidson Museum in Milwaukee is the only museum of its kind in the world. The Milwaukee Art Museum offers a different cultural perspective: its buildings were designed by Santiago Calatrava (2001), David Kahler (1975), and Eero Saarinen (1957). This gives you two clearly distinct starting points for planning your cultural itinerary: the Harley-Davidson Museum’s unique status worldwide and the architectural history of the Art Museum’s buildings.

Museums and Lighthouse History

In Milwaukee, the North Point Lighthouse Museum adds another specific focus to the museum scene. It features a wide selection of artifacts about the city’s famous lighthouse and its keepers. When organizing cultural stops by theme, you can therefore consider the lighthouse and the people who tended it alongside the two different museum experiences.

Lakefront, RiverWalk, and Waterfront Experiences

On the lakefront, Discovery World is located between the Milwaukee Art Museum and the Summerfest Grounds. The Hop’s Lakefront Station serves Discovery World. If you plan to take The Hop to your visit, check the schedule before you travel.

Along the Milwaukee River, the RiverWalk provides public access to the river. It runs along both sides of the Milwaukee River from the site of the former North Avenue Dam, through Downtown and the Historic Third Ward, to Lake Michigan. This route gives the river its own place in the city’s layout: it leads from the former dam site through the named neighborhoods and districts to the lake. For travelers interested in urban waterways, it offers a different perspective from an activity on Lake Michigan.

The self-guided Water Current Tour offers another perspective. Eye-catching signs and artworks are part of the experience; its focus is water quality, resource conservation, and innovative water technologies. The tour shows how Milwaukee plays a leading role in these three areas. In this way, the public river experience and an exploration of water quality and technology stand alongside each other as distinct topics.

There are also different options for active waterfront experiences: Milwaukee’s lakefront offers kayaking on Lake Michigan, while Bradford Beach has sand courts for beach volleyball. These are specific alternatives: an on-the-water activity on the lake or beach volleyball on the sand. Which one suits your stay depends on whether you’d rather be on the water or on a sand court.

Concerts, Cooking Classes, and Dates

Since 2022, the Riverwalk Commons Concert Series has brought people together on select Tuesday evenings to celebrate local musicians, support small businesses and food vendors, and enliven one of Milwaukee’s most unique public spaces. The series is seasonal. Madame Kuony's Kitchen holds ongoing cooking classes led by market vendors, as well as local chefs and instructors; class schedules vary. The events differ in their timing: concerts take place seasonally on select Tuesdays, while class schedules change. Check both calendars for your travel dates.

Choosing the Right Place to Stay

When choosing a hotel in Milwaukee, you can first decide which themes you want to shape your stay: museums and architecture, lighthouse history, the RiverWalk and waterfront experiences, or music and cooking classes. Also coordinate your stay with concert dates or the cooking class you’d like to take.
