Antigo offers two clear highlights for an exploration: local history in its buildings and walking tours, and outdoor trails. The Langlade County Historical Society museum campus includes a former Carnegie library and the original log cabin of the city’s founder; the Springbrook Trail is nearly five miles long. A self-guided walking tour and an audio tour offer additional ways to explore historic sites.

Local History and Historic Walking Tours

The former Carnegie library on the museum campus served as Antigo’s public library from 1905 to 1997. The campus also includes the original log cabin of Francis Deleglise, Antigo’s founder; it was built in 1878. The buildings highlight different periods: the cabin recalls the city’s founder, while the library served as a public institution for more than nine decades.

Antigo has a self-guided walking tour of 15 historic buildings. Another option is the Antigo Historic Audio Tour, with nine stops located within half a mile of one another. The StriveOn app plays the audio automatically as you approach each stop. The two formats have different focuses: the walking tour centers on historic buildings, while the audio tour focuses on its stops and their automatically playing audio.

Springbrook Trail and Regional Trails

The Springbrook Trail is nearly five miles long. Its features include low and elevated boardwalks, scenic overlooks, bridges, and fishing piers. These features offer more than just a measure of the trail’s length: the boardwalks and bridges shape the route, while the overlooks and fishing piers add further highlights. The trail area also has an ADA-accessible kayak launch and disc golf off the trail. These options are located beside the trail and are a separate consideration when planning.

Antigo is designated an Ice Age Trail Community. In Langlade County, the Ice Age Trail chapter’s hiking program includes 84.2 miles of marked trails and connecting routes. The two distances refer to different scales: nearly five miles is the length of the Springbrook Trail in Antigo; 84.2 miles covers the hiking program in Langlade County, including connecting routes. This distinction helps you understand the individual trail and the broader regional hiking network.

The 440 Locomotive and Visiting Hours

The 440 Locomotive is a Baldwin 2-8-0 steam locomotive built in 1900. In 1957, it was the last steam locomotive to travel through Antigo. Visits are available by request when the Langlade County Historical Society Museum is open. From May through October, visits take place Tuesday through Saturday between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Check the schedule and request a visit before you go, so you can account for the seasonal hours and the requirement to request a visit when planning.
