Rock Lake lies within the Town of Lake Mills. Together with the historic downtown, parks, and trails, it offers different ways to explore Lake Mills based on your interests. Two questions are particularly helpful for planning: Should your stay focus more on history and the townscape, or are you more interested in activities on the water and outdoors? Local highlights range from historic districts to boat launches and trails.
Historic Districts Downtown
The Lake Mills Downtown Commercial Historic District includes the large Village Commons Park and parts of six city blocks; together, these make up the historic downtown of Lake Mills. The Mulberry Street Residential Historic District is located in the historic center and includes eleven single-family homes and a church. This allows you to distinguish between two different historic scales: a district that includes a park and parts of several blocks, and a residential district with a specific group of homes and a church. If you are interested in local history, the two districts offer different points of reference for choosing what to focus on.
Rock Lake, Parks, and Volleyball
Rock Lake has five public boat launches; Rock Lake Millpond Access is operated by the City of Lake Mills. At Ferry Park, the area next to the boat launch includes a swimming area and benches. League volleyball takes place at Sandy Beach Park, 345 Sandy Beach Road, Lake Mills, Wisconsin. These offer different ways to spend time on or near the water: boat launches, a swimming area, and a specific sporting activity. Sandy Beach and Mill Pond are among the locations where the City of Lake Mills charges fees at boat launches. If you include the city’s boat launches in your plans, take these fees into account.
Trails and Nature
Sections of the Glacial Drumlin State Trail pass through the Town of Lake Mills. The trail can be used for hiking, biking, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing. Two important conditions apply to winter activities: the trail is not groomed, and users must share it with snowmobiles. If you are planning to cross-country ski or snowshoe, take both into account when making your decision.
Korth County Park has trails, a shelter, and a restroom. The park also includes areas for prairie and wetland restoration. When choosing a nature-focused activity, you can therefore consider both the trails and park facilities as well as the restoration areas.
Campgrounds and Getting Around Downtown
About a mile south of Lake Mills, on Mud Lake Road, is Sandhill Station State Campground. It has 15 campsites, which are accessible only on foot. If you are considering an overnight camping trip, both its approximate location and this access requirement are relevant to your plans.
South Main Street (WIS 89) runs north to south through the center of Lake Mills. The tree-lined street has sidewalks and a narrow planted strip along the side. It provides a clear north–south axis for getting around downtown, while the trees and green strip also shape the streetscape.
