The Rock River flows through Fort Atkinson, and you can paddle on the river. There is also a long bike route, historical insights and a theatre featuring musicals. You can choose what to focus on in Fort Atkinson based on what you want your trip to be about: time by the water, an active route or culture with scheduled visiting hours.

River, bike trail and a detour to the south

The Glacial River Bike Trail is 31.5 miles long, runs through downtown and crosses a covered wooden bridge. This connects two distinctive features of the area: its route through downtown and the bridge as a notable structure along the way. The trail’s length gives you a reference point for planning your route; conditions and access may vary seasonally.

Paddling on the Rock River in Fort Atkinson is another way to experience the area actively. Biking and paddling offer different options for planning your trip: one follows a designated, long route, while the other takes place on the river.

South of Fort Atkinson lies Jefferson County Indian Mounds & Trail Park. A wooded trail on the five-acre site leads to eleven Native American effigy mounds. This detour offers a different focus from the downtown route: the park centers on its wooded trail and historic earthworks. Trail conditions may vary.

Local history at the museum and Foster House

The Hoard Historical Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; admission is free. Its regular opening days and free admission make it an easy-to-plan cultural stop. Visiting hours may change, so check them again before your trip.

At the 1841 Foster House, you can learn how Fort Atkinson residents lived in the 19th century and how the community developed. A friendly guide will show you the first and second floors of the house. This tour requires advance reservations, so plan it differently from a museum visit with regular opening hours.

If you’d like to explore the historic downtown on your own, you can use a brochure for self-guided walks through the Downtown Historic District. It is available at the Fort Atkinson Area Chamber of Commerce and the Hoard Historical Museum. Availability may change, so it’s worth checking before you use the brochure as the basis for your plans.

Seasonal walking tours, market and theatre

On the last weekend of each month from June through October, the Hoard Museum offers free walking tours of the historic downtown. They begin and end near the Farmers Market; start times are 8:30 a.m. and 10 a.m. The tours are wheelchair- and stroller-accessible; leashed dogs are welcome. Dates are seasonal and may change.

The Historic 1901 Water Tower is open for public tours on the first Saturday of each month from June through October, from 10 a.m. to noon. Compared with the downtown walking tours, this is a narrower time window: the tower can only be visited on a specific Saturday morning each month. Check the exact dates before planning your visit around it.

The Fort Atkinson Farmers Market runs from May through October, from 8 a.m. to noon. It features free live music and craft activities for children. Since 1964, Fireside Dinner Theatre has presented musicals with Broadway performers, fine dining and boutiques in a distinctive event setting. Productions and schedules vary; if the theatre is a key reason for your trip, choose your dates based on the current program.

Choose the right focus for your trip

For a historical discovery, the museum, Foster House and seasonal walking tours offer different ways to explore: a museum with regular opening days, a tour that requires reservations and tours on designated weekends. For an active trip, you can choose between the long bike route and paddling on the Rock River. The market and theatre round out the options with clear seasonal periods or program schedules. Which of these options fits your trip therefore depends mainly on the activities you want and the dates involved.
