Eight miles of shoreline at Peninsula State Park and poems displayed on ten permanent panels at Newport State Park reveal two different sides of Door County: landscape and culture. Those looking to combine natural areas, trails, and history will find a range of ways to tailor their stay to their interests.

Shorelines, Dunes, and Forest Trails

Peninsula State Park has eight miles of shoreline in Door County. In the same park, the 850-foot Eagle Tower canopy walk leads to the top of the tower and is fully accessible. Its seasonal opening depends on the weather; check whether the walk is open before your visit.

Whitefish Dunes State Park on the eastern Door County peninsula protects a different landscape: its fragile dunes. The park has 14.5 miles of hiking trails and 1.5 miles of sandy beach. Cave Point County Park adds to the hiking options with a half-mile trail that connects to several miles of trails in the neighboring Whitefish Dunes State Park. Kayak tours at Cave Point County Park let paddlers explore sea caves up close and take in the lakeshore.

The Hidden Brook Boardwalk at The Ridges Sanctuary is nearly one-third of a mile long and winds through a boreal forest. The one-mile Poetry Trail at Newport State Park adds a cultural element: ten permanent panels display poems. As you explore, you can focus either on landscapes or on texts along a trail.

In southern Door County, Potawatomi State Park lies on the shore of Sturgeon Bay. Its 1,200 acres of gently rolling uplands are bordered by steep slopes and rugged limestone cliffs. From Memorial Day through Labor Day, the park offers naturalist programs, guest lectures, and performances by musicians. Rock Island State Park, meanwhile, is home to Wisconsin’s oldest lighthouse and has 2,000 feet of beach.

Compare Trails and Routes

For a choice based on activity and trail type, the Ahnapee State Trail and Door County Coastal Byway offer a clear contrast. The Ahnapee State Trail runs from the city limits of Sturgeon Bay to the Door County–Kewaunee County line. It is flat and paved, making it suitable for families to bike, hike, and horseback ride. By contrast, the Coastal Byway is a 66-mile route for drivers, day-trippers, and experienced road cyclists. In February 2021, it received National Scenic Byway status from the U.S. Department of Transportation.

The Washington Island Ferry may also factor into your plans: it operates year-round across the Death’s Door passage and carries vehicles, motorcycles, and bicycles. Schedules and reservations may change, so check current times and reservation options before traveling.

Maritime History and Rural Life

Interactive exhibits at the Door County Maritime Museum explore the region’s maritime roots. The Door County Historical Museum, built in 1939, offers a different way to explore the past. The Alexander Noble House is a preserved, ten-room 1875 Greek Revival farmhouse with period furnishings and decor.

Historic buildings also bring the rural past to life. The Corner of the Past/Old Anderson House Museum offers tours of 14 restored historic buildings featuring local historical artifacts. Heritage Village includes nine historic buildings depicting rural life in Door County in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. On Washington Island, the Washington Island Farm Museum houses collections of farm equipment, old tools, and kitchen items in nine buildings. It also has small farm animals in an enclosure and a photo collection documenting early rural life in Wisconsin.

The Farm offers another activity: visitors can bottle-feed goat kids, lambs, and piglets. Nature trails and exhibits round out the offerings. The Washington Island Farm Museum also holds an annual Cider Pressing Party during Columbus Weekend. Since the exact date may vary, check the event dates before planning.

A Tradition Around an Open Fire

Traditional fish boils have been among Door County’s attractions and part of its culture for more than 70 years. Locally caught whitefish is cooked over an open fire in a shared outdoor kitchen, usually in a large metal kettle. This cooking method brings a regional food together with a communal cooking space and is quite different from visiting natural areas and museums.
