Mapleton offers two distinct points of interest to consider when planning your trip: trails and Maple Canyon, as well as the history of the town’s founding. The Mapleton Parkway Trail is shown in a city general plan as a paved trail route with a connection to Springville; Mapleton Heritage Square is dedicated to sharing the town’s history. Also in Maple Canyon is Whiting Campground, about three miles from Mapleton.

Trails and Navigation in Maple Canyon

The Mapleton Parkway Trail is a key part of local trail navigation. The city’s 2020 general plan identifies it as the only regional paved trail route in the community at that time. The same plan notes the connection at the northern end of the city to the Hobble Creek Trail in Springville. This identifies both a paved route in Mapleton and a specific connection in Springville.

The plan also notes that horseback riding is permitted in the Parkway Trail corridor. It identifies the trailhead in Maple Canyon as the only trailhead in Mapleton. Check current trail conditions before setting out. Whiting Campground is also in Maple Canyon, about three miles from Mapleton. Check the campground’s availability and conditions before traveling there as well.

Local History at Mapleton Heritage Square

Mapleton Heritage Square is a park dedicated to sharing the story of Mapleton’s founding and history. The square is home to the Roswell Darius Bird Sr. Home, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The listing describes the house as a locally significant, well-preserved example of the Victorian Builder type, with distinctive and consistent brick details. The Levi Kendall Cabin is also located on Heritage Square and is described as one of the first homes in Mapleton. The square brings together two different historical reference points: an architectural classification with specific brick features and a home associated with the town’s early history.

A January 18, 2018 report from the Utah State Archives describes an extensive photo collection held by the Mapleton Historical Museum, covering Mapleton City and the founding families. The collection complements the buildings with a photographic perspective on the city and its founding families.
