When staying in Dell Rapids, local and architectural history, as well as a city campground, can shape different aspects of your plans. The Historic District, Veterans Memorial, and museum offer different historical perspectives; the campground is relevant to camping accommodation planning. The Historic District represents architectural history, while Veterans Memorial Park represents military history.
Main Street, the Historic District, and architectural history
The Dell Rapids Historic District includes 39 buildings along Main Street, the city’s main business area. The Grand Opera House is located within the district. This means the local history extends beyond a single building: you can consider the district as a broader setting and the Opera House as a specific place within it. The architectural history also leads to Sioux Quartzite: Wallace Dow favored the stone, which was quarried in Dell Rapids. This connection adds a second historical perspective to the district—local material history.
Veterans Memorial Park
Dell Rapids Veterans Memorial Park features five large quartzite stones, each with a large brass medallion representing one of the individual branches of the armed forces. Eight theaters of war span the period from the American Revolutionary War to the present day. Three flagpoles are designated for the U.S. flag, the state flag, and the POW flag. A lawn is surrounded by a walkway. The site combines representation by military branch with a sweep across time; the three flags and the layout of the grounds are also specific features.
Museum and Cootie Days
The Dell Rapids Museum works to preserve the rich history and heritage of Dell Rapids and the surrounding region. Its scope therefore extends beyond the city and complements the locally focused Historic District with a regional perspective. In 2017, Cootie Days was held as an annual event at Dell Rapids City Park; that year, the event celebrated its 96th anniversary.
Camping on the Big Sioux River
The city-operated Dell Rapids Campground has 29 sites with electric, water, and sewer hookups. It is located on the Big Sioux River, west of South Garfield Avenue in Dell Rapids, South Dakota. The campground has a shower house, playground, picnic tables, and fire rings. There is also access to a recreational trail with a pedestrian bridge over the Big Sioux River. When choosing where to stay, consider both the site hookups and the additional facilities as separate points of comparison.
Swimming in summer
Dell Rapids City Pool is a popular summer destination with times for public swimming, adult swimming, and family swimming. As the seasonal program may change, check current dates and times before your visit. If a particular type of swimming is important to you, plan around the current time slots.
