A collection of cars that draws the eye
More than 275 rare and hard-to-find automobiles make the Pioneer Auto Show, near the host community of Murdo, a distinctive attraction in Jones County. The exhibits are spread across 42 buildings. Instead of focusing only on automobiles, you can also take a self-guided motorcycle tour through the collection of rare motorcycles. The Pioneer Auto Show diner rounds out the visit with burgers, milkshakes and daily specials.
The town of Murdo offers another way to explore the area's history: A railroad named it after cattle rancher Murdo MacKenzie. Lots for building sites went on sale on July 12, 1906. By then, more than 40 businesses and several homes had already been built there. This sequence gives the town's early development a concrete historical context.
Prairie, wide-open spaces and architectural history
Jones County is defined by wide-open spaces and prairie landscapes where the prairie seems to run toward the sky. Abundant wildlife is also part of the area's character. The Fort Pierre National Grassland extends partly into Jones County, adding another type of landscape to the picture. Those drawn to the vastness of the prairie will find a different focus here than at the collections and historic sites around Murdo.
A notable architectural landmark in Jones County is the Freier Round Barn. It is the only known example in South Dakota of a timber-framed round barn built there from prefabricated catalog components that has retained its historic integrity. This unusual building type makes the barn a discovery in its own right, alongside Murdo's history and the automobile collection. However, a visit cannot be assumed: public access is not guaranteed.
On the water: Boating and shore fishing
The area's water destinations offer different opportunities. North Dam near Murdo has a weather-resistant dock that makes boating possible. At Draper Dam in Jones County, you can fish for perch and catfish from shore. Shore fishing for catfish is also an option on the White River, though access to the river is limited. Access conditions and local circumstances may change. Check them before heading out to fish, especially if you plan to visit the White River.
Parks, golf and other activities near Murdo
Murdo City Park combines activity with a place to take a break: It has a wheelchair-accessible walking path, covered picnic areas and a water feature. If you plan to use the park's facilities, check the latest details before your visit as needed, since facilities may change.
A nine-hole golf course near Murdo has grass greens and rents golf carts. The Jones County Sportsmen's Club, also in the area, offers opportunities for target shooting and archery. These activities offer different options: a round of golf, shooting sports or a stroll in the park each suit different interests, with no set order required.
The Murdo Municipal Swimming Pool has a large swimming pool with a depth of 3 to 10 feet. A one-foot-deep wading pool is also available for small children.
Events and getting oriented
Cowboy events are a regular part of Murdo's event calendar. They include the annual Pioneer Auto Show and Flea Market, the Rising Sun Rodeo and the Ranch Rodeo. If you want to time your trip around an event, check the dates in advance.
Murdo is located at the junction of Interstate 90 and U.S. Highway 83.
