Open landscapes, museums, and recurring festivals give Hutchinson County a range of attractions for a stay. Which places you include depends on whether you want to focus on river and lake scenery, regional history, or events.
Landscape and getting oriented
The county is mostly open and generally relatively flat. The terrain is hilly, however, along the James River and larger streams; grassland and brushland are also concentrated mainly along the James River and its tributaries. Silver Lake is a natural lake in the county. Open areas, river landscapes, and a lake of its own thus offer distinct landscape features.
Two specific landmarks can help you plan your arrival: US Highway 81 is one of the county’s main thoroughfares. The county’s only airport lies just south of Parkston. It has a single paved runway that was extended to accommodate small jets.
Water, parks, and recreation
Fishing, swimming, picnicking, and boating are possible at Tripp Lake. These four activities offer different ways to spend time by the water. In Parkston, East Park brings together other recreational options: it has basketball and tennis courts, as well as baseball and softball fields. The park also has a public swimming pool. Parkston Public Pool has a pool lift for people with limited mobility. This gives you a choice between lake activities and designated sports facilities with a pool.
Museums, buildings, and visiting conditions
The Freeman Museum & Archives displays more than 20,000 objects. It also features South Dakota’s largest privately operated exhibit of artifacts from the Indigenous peoples of the Prairie. The museum includes an 1879 pioneer home, a reconstructed summer kitchen, a rural schoolhouse from 1902, and two rural churches. The Heritage Hall Museum & Archives in Freeman focuses on the history of Germans from Russia who immigrated to the southeastern Dakota Territory beginning in the 1870s.
Individual historic sites also have different visiting conditions. The Schmidt House is closed to the public because of structural problems. Tours of the Preszler House, also called the Oswald Shoe Shop, are available by appointment made by phone. Pioneer Acres offers visitors a tour by prior arrangement. In Milltown, the Milltown United Brethren in Christ Church is the only remaining church of this denomination; an account published in 2023 describes its role in the rural farming community since 1880.
Festivals and regional food culture
The Menno Pioneer Power Show is a two-day annual event in Menno. It takes place on the third weekend after Labor Day weekend. On a 36-acre site, it showcases heritage demonstrations from southeastern South Dakota. During the show, the ground floor of the Mettler Barn serves as a dining hall, while the hayloft is used as an exhibition space. If you plan your trip around the event, check the specific event dates in advance.
The Schmeckfest has also been held annually in Freeman since 1959. The program includes food sales, craft demonstrations, visual arts presentations, a buffet, historical presentations, and food preparation demonstrations. It also includes a musical performed by community members. The South Dakota Chislic Festival takes place at the Prairie Arboretum in Freeman. It began in 2018 with the aim of promoting Freeman and the wider Chislic Circle through the region’s food and heritage traditions.
